Context and stakes for the Global South :The global, economic, social and ecological context is accentuating health inequalities and calls for a global approach that takes all these dimensions into account. In addition, measures and strategies to prevent and combat infectious, emerging or chronic diseases cannot be devised and deployed without taking into account the contexts, practices and specific characteristics of populations. This approach should make it possible to identify at-risk populations, gain a better understanding of the spaces and social interactions that characterize these populations, and evaluate the implementation of interventions designed to reduce social and territorial inequalities in health.Scientific objectives :In this perspective, and adopting a transdisciplinary approach to global health, the scientific aim of this project is to gain a better understanding of social and territorial contexts, while assessing the implementation of public health interventions to reduce health inequalities. An action objective will be to advocate social transformations and guide public policies aimed at reducing these inequalities. The project will be implemented by mobilizing public health approaches and methods (quantitative, qualitative, mixed or participatory as required) that take into account social and spatial contexts, recognizing the primordial role of actors at all levels of intervention. It will be set up in sites where SESSTIM is developing its strategy in the South, notably in West Africa and South-East Asia, with partners and in close liaison with the international global health research platforms currently being developed in these regions (Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Cambodia). It will focus on strengthening links between science and society, and promoting the integration of research findings and evidence into public policy and healthcare practice.Teaching objectives :The UMR SESSTIM coordinates several university diplomas and Master’s courses in Public Health at Aix-Marseille Université, taught by distance learning and giving priority to students from developing countries ( ). The Chairholder will take part in these training courses and contribute to the development of teaching on quantitative and/or qualitative methods and practices relating to global health approaches. He/she will promote these courses through the IRD network and its contacts in the South. He/she will propose training activities in the South to prepare for the Master’s degree and Doctoral thesis. He/she will be involved in tutoring students in the Master of Public Health program, supervising students in their Master’s internships, co-supervising PhD.

Funding available :The selected candidate of the Chair will receive (1) €200k in ANR funding (including a minimum of €120k in payroll costs – PhD students, post-docs, IT contract staff – with the balance earmarked for project operations), (2) an IRD funding for a three-year doctoral contract or a two-year postdoctoral contract and 30k€ for a long-term mission (approximately 6 months), and (3) €50k in funding from the A*Midex University Foundation.RequirementsResearch Field Other Education Level PhD or equivalentSpecific RequirementsAssessment criteria :
