Job description

The IT University of Copenhagen is strengthening and consolidating its existing Software Engineering research and teaching capacity and therefore solicits applications for faculty positions at the rank of assistant professor or associate professor. It is expected that two positions will be filled. The proposed starting date is April 2025 or soon thereafter; this date can be negotiated.The IT University’s vision is to create and share knowledge that is profound and leads to groundbreaking information technology and services for the benefit of humanity. The Computer Science Department seeks to conduct research and education that are both foundational and have impact on industry and society.Once hired, the candidates are expected to contribute to one of the two existing research groups:

  • Software Engineering (

) * Software Quality Research (
) Together they constitute the largest software engineering research environment in Denmark, and one of the larger ones in Scandinavia.The CandidateWe look to hire candidates holding a PhD, especially in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or other closely related fields. The applicants are expected to conduct research and research-based teaching in core software engineering areas such as:

  • Software quality including testing, fuzzing, static analysis, analytics, and maintenance
  • Software design, modeling, and architecture
  • Software engineering for AI and AI for software engineering,
  • Software engineering for robotics, cyber physical systems, and digital twins
  • Software evolution, software processes and practices
  • Empirical software engineering and constructive methods such as tool building

Highly qualified candidates in all areas of software engineering are encouraged to apply. A good approximation of the area of interest is the scope of the ICSE conference. We expect a documented record of peer-reviewed publications in the areas covered by conferences and journals such as, ICSE, FSE, ASE, USENIX, ICSME, MODELS, MSR, SANER, FM, TACAS, ESEM, as well as TOSEM, TSE, JSS, EMSE, and SOSYM. Publications in other venues are equally appreciated if they cover related topics.The ideal candidate should document:

  • Competences in developing and conducting teaching that is both effective and well received by students.
  • Competences in conducting high quality academic research, reflected in demonstratable outputs.
  • Experience in engaging and collaborating with industry partners, public sector, etc.
  • Strong cooperation skills and ability to work in a team.
  • Contributions to the goals of the institutions in which they have worked as well as to the research community, for example participation in committees, etc.

The assistant professorship is a temporary position for up to 3 years with the possibility of extension. The position requires academic qualifications at PhD level.In addition, candidates for a position as associate professorship should be able to:

  • Attract external research funding
  • Supervise PhD students
  • Be willing to learn Danish (for applicants who cannot speak a Scandinavian language).

It is understood that even highly qualified applicants will satisfy these requirements to varying degrees, for example because of differences in countries and research fields.Job descriptionThe candidate is expected to perform research activities in collaboration with fellow faculty members in one of the named research groups, and to develop collaborations with other environments at the IT University when relevant.The candidate is expected to contribute to the IT University’s education programs, both by giving courses and by supervising student projects. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to engage with society through external collaboration, to participate in securing external funding, and to contribute to the IT University’s strategic goals.General informationThe IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) is a teaching and research-based tertiary institution concerned with information technology (IT) and the opportunities it offers. The IT University has more than 160 full-time Faculty members. Research and teaching in information technology span all academic activities which involve computers including computer science, information and media sciences, humanities and social sciences, business impact and the commercialization of IT.About the Computer Science DepartmentThe ITU Computer Science Department conducts research in all aspects of computer science and data science, including algorithms, databases, government IT, machine learning, natural language processing, network science, optimization, programming languages, quantum computing, robotics, security, semantics, software engineering, software verification, type theory, and more, as well as a range of applications. The department has 55 permanent faculty, 65 PhDs and postdocs, as well as other staff.   • For candidates applying for the Associate professor position: documentation of a) received observation and feedback on teaching, b) pedagogical experience and training courses as a teacher, c) a formal written assessment of teaching competence and d) a teaching record within one or more of the teaching areas listed for the position
  • For candidates applying for the Associate professor position: a record of contributing to the goals of the institutions in which the candidate has worked, for example participation in committees, etc.
