The core activities consist of the development of new molecular virology diagnostics as well as surveillance and characterization of viruses, all including work in BSL-2 and BSL-3 facilities. ViFU routinely tests for HIV drug-resistance, diagnoses human/animal viruses by metagenomics methods, and performs whole genome sequencing, and variant tracing of SARS-CoV-2. We furhter develop new molecular biology diagnostic methods based on ddPCR, Crispr-Cas, and NGS (Illumina and Nanopore) for the diagnostics and surveillance of exotic and emerging viruses, and zoonotic viruses in humans and animals. Additionally, the laboratory performs molecular epidemiological surveillance of exotic and emerging viruses in collaboration with SSI’s Epidemiology Department.ViFU is part of the Department of Virus & Microbial special diagnostics (VMS) with approx. 120 employees divided over 6 laboratories. These laboratories perform research, diagnostics, typing/sequencing, surveillance and monitoring of virus infections including exotic and emerging viruses in both humans and animals. VMS is a cornerstone of the national virus preparedness as well as a WHO center for influenza.Your role will be to:
- Project planning and experimental design of metagenomic NGS protocols aimed at virus detection and characterization.
- Establish whole-genome sequencing protocols for emerging viruses.
- Participate in ongoing research projects on virus evolution.
- Collaborate with bioinformaticians and researchers across the Statens Serum Institut.
- Supervise lab technicians and students.
- Engage in other research activities within ViFU, including reporting on virus evolution and conducting metagenomic studies of environmental samples, including wastewater.
