Unpacking functionality of farms, hamlets and villages and their patterning in the Ancient Mediterranean through archaeological pottery studies
Offer DescriptionNext to everything revolved around agriculture in the ancient world. The historical framework of agricultural production in Antiquity is quite well developed. While archaeology is contributing to some extent to this framework, mainly based on regional survey projects in the Mediterranean, more can be done. To start with, the archaeological definition of agricultural settlements, such as farms, hamlets and villages, is traditionally considered more or less self-explanatory. This metaphoric use of terminology is hiding analytical issues as well as potential. This PhD will revisit the very foundation on which relevant archaeological interpretation is based: the humble pot sherd. In their millions, this is the most common find in archaeological surveys, yet often only rudimentary chronological information is tapped from these. Based on regional case studies, the PhD will introduce improved data analytical methods to underscore chronologies, to develop functional interpretation beyond the current generic definitions, and to integrate information on artisanal production and exchange of the attested pottery as a proxy for the degrees of integration of settlement landscapes, the level of intensity of production and the effects of social inequalities. Methods will focus on doing more with data uncertainties, which are plenty as survey pottery comes with no associated stratigraphical or contextual information. Other contributions to the wider discipline entail more detailed attempts at data standardisatio n, increasing the comparative potential of datasets within and beyond the project. In this respect, the PhD can be a milestone for the Departments involved, as well as for the wider discipline.
