Duties and Responsibilities

Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 160 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with UN Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community. This intervention fits within the collaboration between UNDRR and UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) on establishing a regional collaborative mechanism for urban resilience in Central Asia, as part of UNDP’s regional project “Enhancing Urban Resilience to Disaster Risk and Climate Change in Central Asia,” funded by the Government of Japan, which supports Central Asian countries in strengthening climate resilience, with a focus on urban areas. Experiences and lessons from the Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) network will be leveraged to foster closer cooperation and enrich the development and implementation of the Urban Resilience Training Module, ensuring its context-specific relevance and practical application across the region. The development of a Compendium of Best Practices for Urban Resilience Building in Central Asia, will be an integral part of a regional training module and support the fostering of closer cooperation through the engagement of cities of Central Asia in the Making Cities Resilient 2030 initiative. The Compendium will build on case studies from across the region and serve as a regional knowledge product to support local governments, national authorities, and development partners in advancing resilience actions aligned with disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation integration. The candidate will be under the supervisor of the Programme Management Officer and the position will be home-based.

Qualifications/special skills

Advanced university degree (master”s degree or equivalent) in urban development, urban system, governance or related area is required. A first-level university degree in combination with at least two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Minimum 5 years of experience in Disaster Risk Reduction, urban planning, urban development and related areas, such as local level, infrastructure or public administration is required. Familiarity with the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, disaster risk reduction, MCR2030 initiative is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the two working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in Russian and English is required.
