This specific position focuses on the development and application of deep learning techniques for the separation of musical instruments in multichannel mixtures. The successful candidate will explore state-of-the-art methods such as TF-Grid and Demucs to isolate and analyze individual instrumental tracks from complex audio recordings. Leveraging the rich multichannel data provided by the Repertorium project, the research will aim to enhance the quality of source separation through the integration of temporal, spatial, and spectral information. This is particularly critical in the context of multichannel datasets, where spatial cues can significantly improve the disambiguation of overlapping sources. Objectives include: Developing models that exploit spatial and phase information in multichannel recordings. Creating training datasets from Repertorium’s extensive archives of ensemble performances. Optimizing performance metrics for real-world scenarios, such as live recordings and acoustically challenging environments. Evaluating perceptual and quantitative improvements compared to current benchmarks. The outcomes of this research will contribute to advancing tools for musicological analysis and the preservation of European cultural heritage. Furthermore, the research has potential applications in immersive audio production, virtual reality, and educational tools for music analysis. This position is ideal for candidates with a PhD in machine learning, signal processing, or related fields, and a strong background in audio analysis. Applicants should demonstrate expertise in deep learning frameworks, multichannel audio processing, and a passion for applying technological advancements to cultural preservation.
