Volunteer Centre West Berkshire is a charitable incorporated organisation, formed in 1974. The organisation’s overriding ethos is to match local people to local need. We provide information, advice and guidance and personally match people to one of the more 350 volunteering opportunities in West Berkshire.

The role

After 17 years’ service our current treasurer is retiring and we are seeking a Trustee who

will become our Treasurer and provide a strategic overview and guidance to the board on

the charity’s financial standing.

The Treasurer helps trustees carry out their financial

responsibilities, maintaining an overview of the organisation’s affairs, ensuring its financial

viability, and that proper financial records and procedures are maintained. The treasurer

will advise trustees on a quarterly basis and work with the CEO of the charity to produce

and monitor an annual budget each year and oversee the preparation of the year end

accounts for audit.

They are accountable to the Chair of Trustees and will work closely with the CEO, Trustee

board and Finance Officer.

Accounts are maintained by an accounts officer who works over two days per week and

inputs all transactions via QuickBooks. The charity’s payroll is outsourced. The turnover of

the charity including grants and donations is circa 250,000 per annum. The charity has

proper reserves and funding arrangements in place for 3 years and is in very good order.

Main Trustee Duties

• Ensure the charity is carrying out its purposes to the public benefit
• Comply with the charity governing document and the law
• Act in the charity’s best interests
• Manage the charity’s resources responsibly
• Act with reasonable care and skill
• Ensure the charity is accountable
• Dedication to the charity’s cause and objectives; willing to act as the charity’s

ambassador to external bodies, individuals, charities and companies

Main Treasurer Duties

• making sure the charity keeps proper accounts
• reviewing the charity’s financial performance
• drawing up or reviewing policies for finance and investment
• ensuring that the charity has robust and effective financial controls in place
• liaising with finance staff and with the charity’s independent examiner or auditor

The ideal candidate will have

• good financial understanding with the ability to read and understand accounts,
• especially in a charitable setting
• Competent IT skills, with working knowledge of QuickBooks
• Proven ability to communicate and explain financial information to members of the board
• and other stakeholders
• Analytical and evaluation skills, demonstrating good judgement
• Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of
• trusteeship, and the Treasurer role in particular

Time

commitment:

The board meets

a minimum of 4 times a year and the Treasurer/Trustee is expected to be available

for all meetings, in person or virtual – dates agreed in advance.

The

Treasurer/Trustee will be expected to visit the charity office on occasion to

meet with the Finance

Team and/or CEO.

The Treasurer also oversees the preparation of the year end accounts. Year End is 31 March.
