Here at GXO, we our recruiting for a Transport Shift Manager (Nights) to join our team in Basingstoke, for our customer Sainsbury’s. You’ll play a pivot role as a leader for our colleagues in Transport (inc. Fleet), ensuring best-in-class service for optimising, utilisation and smooth running of our operation. You’ll demonstrate great leadership that promotes an inclusive culture, generating high levels of trust which drives high performance, whilst meeting responsibilities including; legal, KPIS, budgetary and customer service levels.
The role is being offered on a full-time, permanent basis. Shift pattern of 40 hours per week (5 out of 7, with start times between 18:00 to 22:00).

We’re looking to offer a salary of up to £43,000 per annum (£3,120 additional shift allowance), and 25 days annual leave (plus bank holidays). Your benefits package includes a company sponsored pension scheme, life assurance and access to our benefits platform, including retail discounts
What you’ll do on a typical day:
- People leadership & succession: Lead day-to-day people management for direct and indirect reports, making people decisions in line with legislation, policy and values, supporting development, succession planning, and the colleague lifecycle through the HR business model
- Operational leadership of Transport: Manage daily Transport operations, including resource allocation, utilisation, capability and performance, to deliver safe, efficient site operations and achieve KPIs across permanent and agency colleagues
- Performance, compliance & safety: Ensure consistent operational standards across the end-to-end transport function, monitoring and implementing compliance with Transport, HSEQ, legislative and policy requirements
- Continuous improvement & decision-making: Identify and present efficiency and continuous improvement opportunities, balancing service and cost, while making informed operational decisions and knowing when to act quickly versus deepen analysis
- Stakeholder & team management: Maintain effective external stakeholder relationships (including customers) and directly manage Transport Team Managers and clerical teams, while indirectly leading wider Transport colleagues across the shift
What you need to succeed at GXO:
- Experienced in an FMCG transport environment, qualified or working towards a Transport Manager CPC
- Transport compliance, safety & legislation knowledge
- Proven ability to lead, engage, empower and inspire teams to deliver results, role‑modelling continuous self‑development while maintaining focus under pressure in fast‑paced environments
- Confident in making time‑pressured decisions, constructively challenging the status quo, identifying process improvement opportunities, and influencing change through clear presentation and judgement
- Builds collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders, understands influencing techniques to achieve outcomes, operates effectively in (or with awareness of) unionised environments, and seeks support when required
