Definition

Under immediate supervision, is responsible for learning to conduct inspections in one of the skilled trade industries of building, mechanical (HVAC), electric, or plumbing; performs related duties as required.

Examples of Work

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)

Learns the processes and procedures for conducting inspections as related to a specific trade to include customer service, time management, field documentation, and record keeping;

Learns the codes and ordinances as related to the trade subject to inspection;

Learns to review construction documents for compliance with applicable codes;

Learns to conduct inspections of residential and commercial buildings and related structures pertaining to a specific trade to ensure that construction, alterations, and maintenance comply with governing codes and ordinances;

Learns to inspect work performed within a specific trade to ensure that the methods, techniques, and materials used are in accordance with approved plans submitted and relevant codes, requirements, and ordinances; checks work to ensure that proper permits were issued;

Learns to identify unsafe field conditions;

Takes photographs during inspections to document observed violations and downloads photographs into shared files for use in enforcement actions;

Assists in preparing non-compliance notices distributed to the appropriate parties responsible for buildings, appurtenances, and structures not in compliance with relevant codes, requirements, and ordinances;

Learns to prepare correspondences and consults with builders, contractors, architects, homeowners, and other responsible parties on matters concerning inspection activities;

Operates a City vehicle to conduct City business.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a valid certification as a Building Inspector Trainee, Mechanical Inspector Trainee, Electrical Safety Inspector Trainee, or Plumbing Inspector Trainee issued by the State of Ohio Board of Building Standards.

Possession of a valid driver’s license.
