General Summary:

This position reports to the Thermal Team Leader or their designee; is located in Maranello, Italy. Responsible for the development of the car thermal systems, with the Power Unit as the primary focus and Brakes as the secondary development area. The position covers all aspects from conceptual design to successfully running the car on track for each race event.

General Responsibilities:

  • Promote teamwork and effective communications to develop working relationships between all personnel and departments.
  • Follow and maintain safety regulations in all venues.
  • Assume any responsibilities delegated by the Thermal Team Leader or their designee.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Setup, run and post-process thermal simulation.
  • Thermodynamic design of power unit cooling system architecture.
  • CFD of internal components and flow systems.
  • Direct or undertake surface definition of cooling system components.
  • Liaise with the Haas design office to ensure effective integration of cooling components in the car layout.
  • Liaise with external aero development groups.
  • Liaise with third party suppliers and technical partners to ensure efficient communication flow.
  • Analysis and evaluation of data from test bench, on car tests and races
  • Write procedures and test plans.
  • Create reports to communicate findings.
  • Liaise with race team for test/GP event preparation.
  • Support trackside engineering in the management of the car cooling configuration throughout the Race weekends.
  • Develop custom analysis and simulation tools for power unit and brakes.

Education and Work Experience:

Engineering degree in mechanical, aeronautical, automotive engineering or equivalent.

Experience in Formula 1 or other motorsport categories is considered a plus.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong communication skills, written and verbal
  • Sound knowledge of thermodynamics.
  • Experience in heat transfer calculations.
  • Experience with CFD software and CAD software (surface design).
  • Understanding of aerodynamics and fluid analysis.
  • Data analysis skills
  • Background in racing car design is considered a plus.
  • Work to a consistently high standard in stressful and time constrained environment.
  • Quick decision-making skills whilst working through problems in a scientific and analytical way.
  • Work well within a team environment with personnel at all levels.
  • A sympathetic approach to your work colleagues and an ability to integrate within a group environment.
  • A can-do positive approach and a willingness to help others is essential.

Equipment and Applications:

  • Microsoft Office and engineering packages
  • Experience with CAD, with expertise in CATIA/3DX
  • Knowledge of Matlab/Simulink
  • Experience with VBA programming is helpful.
  • Experience with data acquisition software could be advantageous.

Work Environment Physical Demands:

An ability to work and prioritize within a high pressure, time sensitive environment while retaining a methodical approach is essential. The role may require occasional domestic & international travels and a willingness to work long and flexible hours including weekends.

This position may require lifting to 50 pounds, repeated bending, squatting and manual dexterity. Fast-paced work environment requiring heavy mental demands. Work environment includes machinery, race cars, 7-post and other rigs, grinding debris, and hazardous fluids. All employees must ensure compliance with the Company Health and Safety Policy, and all relevant other statutory Health and Safety legislation.
