Job description

Offer Description

  • Key words: Extreme events; adaptation; conservation; forest socio-ecosystems; open science.
  • Planned tenured position as IRD Research Director after a 3 to 6-year contract.
  • Chair attached to the UMR Institut des Sciences de l’Evolution de Montpellier (CNRS, EPHE, IRD, Université de Montpellier), Montpellier, France

Context and stakes for the Global South :Biodiversity at all scales is vulnerable to global change, particularly extreme climatic, societal or environmental events in terms of intensity (e.g. tornadoes, balance shifts, political or technological changes), speed (e.g. changes in rainfall patterns, migrations) or frequency (e.g. fires, floods). Sustainable development requires the preservation of this biodiversity, in the 30% of protected areas but also in the remaining 70%, and the implementation of adaptations to changes in environmental management by local populations. Tropical forests, in a global and inclusive sense, are socio-ecosystems where these issues are particularly acute. The present Chair, through its involvement in the CHARM-EU European University and the IDIL graduate program, is in line with UMR ISEM’s ambition to i) strengthen training in and through research in the South and overseas, and ii) forge strong partnerships with universities committed to interdisciplinary and intersectoral approaches in the South.Scientific objectives :The Chair is part of research into the characterization and study of the evolution and dynamics and/or conservation of biodiversity in the face of extreme events, today or in the past, using innovative methodology (e.g. environmental/ancient DNA, mathematical/biostatistical modeling, high-throughput population genomics, geometric morphometrics). As part of a co-construction approach, The person recruited will integrate the human dimension of his/her research topic into his/her project, for example by linking scientific knowledge with indigenous empirical knowledge and practices, or the socio-cultural and heritage dimensions of his/her object of study, and may propose adaptations of management and mitigation policies based on local practices. While adopting a general vision of the problem, he/she will be able to choose one or more coherent objects of study for his project. He/she will preferentially carry out his/her research in a low- to middle-income country or region in the South, or in the French overseas territories where ISEM is already involved, and will use tools that are consistent with those of ISEM. He or she will be involved in structuring national or international programs, such as PEPR FORESTT or the Great Green Wall initiative.Teaching objectives :The person recruited will teach in the Earth – Water – Environment or Biology-Ecology departments of the Montpellier Faculty of Science. He/she will be encouraged to take part in or develop transdisciplinary training courses integrating an SHS dimension in the field of sustainability sciences. He or she will be able to enroll in the international training programs offered by the University of Montpellier (CHARM-EU European University, IDIL graduate program, MEME master’s program), and/or deploy courses in the University of Mayotte, in which the University of Montpellier is a partner in the Science-Technology field. It is also encouraged to develop teaching offers in the field of sustainability sciences with partner institutions in its study area.Funding available :The selected candidate of the Chair will receive (1) €200k in ANR funding (including a minimum of €120k in payroll costs – PhD students, post-docs, IT contract staff – with the balance earmarked for project operations), 2) an IRD funding for a three-year doctoral contract or a two-year postdoctoral contract and 30k€ for a long-term mission (approximately 6 months), (3) University de Montpellier funding between 50 and 100 k€.RequirementsResearch Field Other Education Level PhD or equivalentSpecific RequirementsAssessment criteria :

  • Excellence of the candidate, motivation, scientific and pedagogical supervision capacity.
  • Quality, originality, interdisciplinary of the research and teaching projects and their Global South component.
