Context and stakes for the Global South :Exposure to natural disasters can have disruptive effects on populations in the Global South, both in the short and very long term. Household reactions, constrained in particular by the effects of climate disruption on opportunities for spatial mobility in damaged environments, can lead to a reduction in investment in human capital, through decisions affecting children’s education or leading to early marriage for young girls. Repeated exposure can also modify the cultural traits of populations, deteriorating confidence and increasing preference for the present, thus impacting development prospects.Scientific objectives :The project is part of IRD’s drive to develop multidisciplinary, cross-departmental research. At the Université Clermont Auvergne (UCA) – I-Site “CAP 20-25”, it forms part of the cluster set up within the International Research Centre 4 “Natural disasters and sustainable development” (CIR4), around the LabEX IDGM+ and ClerVolc coordinated respectively by the CERDI (Centre d’Etudes et de Recherches sur le Développement International) and the LMV (Laboratoire Magma et Volcans), the two Clermont-Ferrand laboratories for which the IRD is the supervisor.The profile sought is that of a development economist working on vulnerability analysis, with a very good ability to interact with other disciplines. A thorough understanding of the implications of natural disasters requires a holistic approach, mobilizing different disciplinary approaches within the human and social sciences, in-depth knowledge of the field of study, and the ability to interact with researchers working in the earth sciences. The scientific project is expected to contribute to the debate on how public authorities should respond to catastrophic events.Taking advantage of recent advances in the field, the work will draw on innovative, massive data (satellite, textual) and/or methods used in data science.The Chair aims to develop interdisciplinary research in the field of sustainability sciences developed at IRD, and in the field of CIR4 “Natural disasters and sustainable development” of the UCA I-SITE “CAP20-25”.Teaching objectives :The successful candidate will contribute a maximum of 28 hours of teaching per year to the activities of the International Development Graduate Track (IDGT), master’s research track and doctorate in economics, in the form of lectures and seminars. He/she may also take part in “sustainable development” teaching units developed in other courses at the University Clermont Auvergne.The courses and seminars given within the IDGT will aim to strengthen the training of young researchers (some of them from the South) in the analysis of the risk of natural disasters and the vulnerability of populations, themes which are the subject of a growing number of master’s theses and doctoral dissertations at CERDI. They will cover analytical aspects and quantitative techniques (acquisition and use of databases). We may also be involved in the development of continuing education (short courses, within the PCDI) aimed at researchers and stakeholders in the South.Funding available :The selected candidate of the Chair will receive (1) €200k in ANR funding (including a minimum of €120k in payroll costs – PhD students, post-docs, IT contract staff – with the balance earmarked for project operations), 2) an IRD funding for a three-year doctoral contract or a two-year postdoctoral contract and 30k€ for a long-term mission (approximately 6 months), (3) University Clermont Auvergne funding for a doctoral contract.RequirementsResearch Field Other Education Level PhD or equivalentSpecific RequirementsAssessment criteria :

• hold a doctorate as provided in article L.612-7 of the French Education Code;
• hold a PhD or doctoral level of education;
• hold a doctorate in engineering;
• hold a study and research diploma in computer science, GIS;

• hold an overseas university degree considered equivalent to the above-mentioned diplomas; in this case, applicants should submit an equivalence request.
