About usThe Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine (FoLSM) is hiring a Technical Manager to join the Teaching Laboratories in the Centre for Education. The post holder will have a great opportunity to be part of a team helping to deliver world class practical education and enhancing the student experience. FoLSM is an ambitious and forward-thinking Faculty, with an outstanding reputation across a range of disciplines in Life Sciences and Medicine.About the roleThe post holder will be an experienced and professional technical manager with operational knowledge of teaching laboratories; experience supporting the delivery of high quality and innovative teaching on a large scale and managing and supporting a team of technical staff.The post holder will be responsible for the multi-disciplinary teaching labs at Waterloo campus, leading a team of 14 technicians, liaising with 2 other technical managers and reporting to the Education Technical Manager. The role will provide support to departments such as pharmacy, nutrition and forensics amongst others. Overseeing timetabling and equipment requirements, ensuring compliance with Health and safety regulations and the universities environmental sustainability policies and ensuring that practical teaching runs smoothly.This is an excellent opportunity to support and drive innovation and sustainability in teaching within the university and to inspire and support an enthusiastic and diverse team of technicians. Significantly impacting on student experience and successThis is a full time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.About youTo be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:Essential criteria
- Level 6 qualification, e.g., relevant undergraduate degree or equivalent, plus substantial work experience in relevant technical/scientific service posts OR Extensive work experience in relevant technical/ scientific posts with management experience and/or qualification.
- Evidence of an active commitment to professional development, such as working towards CSci and clear progression in increasingly demanding jobs.
- Comprehensive technical experience and knowledge of a range of scientific procedures and the underpinning scientific theory applicable to the work area and their environmental impact.
- Excellent spoken and written communication skills, with advanced computer use and strong interpersonal and influencing/behavioural skills to build a strong network to support the delivery of the service.
- Solutions-focused self-starter, with excellent planning and analytical skills, able to manage staff and facilities, setting performance standards, and establishing protocols to deliver these.
- Comprehensive knowledge of regulations and best practice governing area of work, including Health & Safety and environmental sustainability.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from various cultural backgrounds, with a deep appreciation for the value of diverse perspectives.
- Knowledge of environmental impacts of laboratory work and an interest in reducing the negative impacts.
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of a commitment to professional development, including professional registration, such as RSciTech and a willingness to learn new techniques.
- Experience of supervising/advising junior team members, giving feedback on performance levels and training/coaching where necessary.
- Formal Health & Safety qualification e.g., NEBOSH/IOSH.
£43,205 to £50,585 per annum, including London Weighting Allowance
