Job description:

DESY

Particle accelerators based on novel plasma technology are promising to positively disrupt a multitude of accelerator-based applications in the health sector, industry, and fundamental research. Given their high-potential for impact in society at-large, plasma accelerators form a cornerstone of the DESY accelerator research and development strategy. This advanced accelerator concept leverages extreme fields in the GV/m-range, which exceed those achievable with traditional radiofrequency accelerators by orders of magnitude. As a consequence, plasma-based particle accelerators are the key to the miniaturization of today’s large-scale accelerator installations and to the future deployment of compact, mobile systems. DESY advances all facets of beam- and laser-driven plasma accelerators with a focus on programmatic R&D toward high-average-power, stable beams and developing frontier technologies to deliver on the potential of plasma-based particle acceleration. The Plasma Accelerator Group (MPA) invites candidates to apply for the position of technical coordinator and take responsibility for the development of all technical infrastructure in laser-plasma accelerator science. This includes the future development of research facilities and their usage, and in particular, includes the coordination of the implementation of the plasma injector for PETRA IV.

About your role:

  • Execution of scientific research in laser-plasma acceleration
  • Technical coordination of all laser-plasma research facilities of the Plasma Accelerator Group in close exchange with the laboratory / project managers and affiliated groups
  • Technical coordination of the PETRA IV plasma injector
  • Organisation of group internal radiation protection processes
  • Solution of complex problems in the field of plasma accelerator science
  • Supervision of scientists as well as consulting and interdisciplinary cooperation with other accelerator, plasma, laser and data science researchers

About you:

  • Master degree with PhD in physics or engineering or equivalent qualification
  • Comprehensive expertise and long-term experience in the technical and scientific planning, construction, and operation of plasma-based particle accelerators
  • Long-term experience in laser, plasma, and accelerator physics
  • Experience in radiation protection procedures
  • International experience and teamwork skills
  • Leadership experience
  • Very good command of German and English, both written and spoken

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. We attach particular importance to appreciative cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work (up to 50%). You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket at both locations.

We look forward to receiving your application via our application portal:
