The new campus offers a range of facilities including specialist academic spaces and equipment, a large 24-hour library, digital accessibility hubs, catering and retail outlets and staff common room.The Teaching Wet Laboratories include a large open laboratory for around 100-120 students and smaller facilities including a large equipment room and a cell culture training suite. These facilities will be used for scheduled teaching along with student and staff independent research work. They include a wide range of chemical and biochemical related equipment and will support teaching and research in a wide range of disciplinary areas including Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biochemical Engineering.About the roleWe are recruiting for a Teaching Wet Laboratories Technician to join our team, part of VP Strategy, on a secondment basis until 31st July 2025. As such, this role is only open for applications to current UCL staff members.The Teaching Wet Laboratories Technician will be part of a technical team running the
general wet laboratory and associated smaller facilities, all of which are based on our UCL East Campus. The laboratories will be used for both scheduled teaching and
drop-in project work for staff and students.Under the direction of the Teaching Wet Laboratories Manager, the role holder will provide the highest quality, multi-specialist technical expertise and support to students and staff using the facilities. The role involves safety management processes, inductions for users, safe storage of material, equipment and waste disposal, managing stocks, purchasing equipment and consumables, arranging maintenance and repairing of equipment. The Technician will also contribute to timetabling and planning
use of the facility.The Technician will support the full range of activities in the laboratory but will have expertise and input in activities related to physical sciences and engineering teaching laboratories, including the set up and use of large experimental rigs and analytical equipment. They will be expected to support staff in the provision of a range of experiments including the use of laboratory safety equipment such as fume cupboards, electrical equipment such as power supplies, general equipment such as balances, ovens and mixers.About youThe ideal candidate will have a strong Chemistry and/or Chemical Engineering
background with experience working in a teaching laboratory or similar facility with a wide range and number of users. You should also have knowledge of health and safety at work practices and legal requirements and experience in the implementation of health and safety in a laboratory, or similar facility.You are an excellent communicator, able to provide advice and assistance to staff and students to include explanation of techniques and equipment and interpretation of the concepts. You have excellent computer skills including Word, Excel, etc. You are able to work independently, dealing with unforeseen problems and circumstances as they arise, as well as work as part of a team.What we offerAs well as the exciting opportunities this role presents we also offer some great benefits some of which are below:
