Job Description:

The Opportunity

At Leonardo, we have an opportunity for Systems and Senior Systems Engineers.

You will join a Fire Control Radar team within the Radar and Advanced Targeting line of business, based in Edinburgh and Newcastle to develop new and improve existing features for an established fire-control radar system. This is a highly demanding sector of business addressing customer requirements for flexible, high performance systems capable of performing the role of primary sensor on some of the world’s most technically advanced combat aircraft. Contemporary radar systems are both highly evolved and complex.

This Systems Engineering vacancy presents an exciting opportunity for an individual to develop and grow into a pivotal post at Leonardo, supporting the further development of an in-service Fire Control Radar product. There is opportunity to work directly with the end user, taking feedback to implement further improvements to the existing design. The work is technically demanding requiring the successful candidate to develop skills in radar system design quickly.

The successful candidate should have experience in multiple aspects of the Systems Engineering lifecycle. An ability to operate effectively within a diverse group of engineers from a wide range of engineering disciplines is required. The role involves analysing and presenting large volumes of Radar data in order to provide technical support to internal and external customers. The candidate will develop concepts, architectures and define system designs – taking these forward to implementation, integration, test and evaluation.

As a Systems Engineer, you will work closely with the Systems Team Lead as well as the engineering functions necessary to deliver the Radar product to the customer community.

What you will do as a Systems/Senior Systems Engineer

  • Support the Systems Team Lead to undertake tasks as part of a wider programme to integrate new functionality into the existing radar software
  • Analysis of large and complex volumes of radar data from ground and flight trials against requirements and raising problem reports against those requirements to allow detailed investigation and resolution of problems
  • Co-ordinating activities between the design and the flight trials teams to ensure that trials are planned and executed with reference to relevant goals and objectives.
  • Ownership of aspects of product design, development & qualification.
  • Creating, updating and managing requirements.
  • Designing algorithms for internal radar control.
  • Creating models to evaluate the behaviour of the radar.
  • Creating, updating and managing test procedures to prove system requirements.
  • Managing end-to-end lifecycle traceability & reporting to achieve certification and delivery.
  • Technical aptitude and a willingness to learn about radar systems including introduction of new technologies into in-service equipment.
  • Perform technical peer reviews.
  • Interact with a range of technical & non-technical project stakeholders across multiple disciplines.
  • Actively support knowledge sharing and exploitation of best practice.
  • This role is predominantly office based but occasional UK/Europe travel may be required to support the programme.
  • Occasional support to ground and/or flight trials will be required off-site.

What we are looking for

  • An ability/aptitude to interface with customers both Internal and External.
  • The role is based at the Leonardo offices in Newcastle, UK with occasional travel within the UK and worldwide to our customer, partner and end-user sites.
