Offer DescriptionThe Systems Chemistry team is a young research group working at the interface of supramolecular chemistry and fluidics. We design chemical reaction networks that are used to control hydrogel materials, and we carry out reactions in microfluidic devices with application in flow chemistry. The group consists of ~10 researchers from all over the world (Europe, Asia, South-America, etc.) with a mixed chemistry, chemical engineering, and physics background, led by Prof. Thomas Hermans.We are looking for an assistant in the research group to help with the day-to-day running of the chemical laboratory and project/funding management. For many tasks, the IMDEA staff provides additional support. We foresee the following tasks and requirements of your background.PRINICIPAL FUNCTIONS AND TASKS– Chemical Laboratory

  • Coordinate with the researchers in the group the ordering, receiving, and stocking of chemical products, or other types of orders in general.
  • Ensure cleanliness and order of the laboratory, and make sure safety regulations are followed (in collaboration with IMDEA staff).
  • Coordinate the maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment (in collaboration with IMDEA staff). ~20 specific machines to do spectroscopy, 3D printing, and microscopy.
  • Train new researchers on specific equipment (confocal microscopy/3D printing), and/or help with design/fabrication of custom fluidic devices. There are dedicated technicians and fabrication services at IMDEA and on campus, so it is more that you interface with them, than doing all the work yourself.
  • Optionally, perform measurements to help researchers in the lab on equipment you are familiar with. We can arrange internal/external training to improve your skills in that regard.

– Admin Tasks

  • Scheduling the group’s weekly group meeting, invited speaker presentations & project meetings of European projects. In selected meetings, taking notes and drafting minutes of the meeting (in English).
  • Coordinating public tender preparation, tracking orders, arranging travel, processing reimbursements of travel or small purchases.
  • Help with recruiting/interviewing new researchers, applying for specific postdoctoral (or other types of) funding together with Prof. Hermans. Also, onboarding of new (international) researchers (providing support to register with local resources -health care/utilities, etc.

  • Fluent in Spanish (C2 or higher) and English (at least C2 level). A strong oral and written command of the English language (B2 equivalent).
  • Chemistry or chemical engineering background (completed a master program or hold a PhD degree).
  • You communicate well and efficiently within teams, you have good problem solving skills.
  • Track record in team work and/or management of a laboratory environment.

– VALUED

  • Training in European research project management is a plus.
  • Basic accounting skills are a bonus.
  • Experience in scientific writing and/or publishing is a strong plus.
