We are looking for a highly motivated and independent staff scientist for a position as facility manager for an in-house small angle X-ray scattering facility for biological molecules (CPHSAXS) funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The position is for 2 years. The starting date is April 1st 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Our research
The facility is established in a group of collaborators; Michael Gajhede and Annette Eva Langkilde (Dept. of Drug Design and Pharmacology), Vito Foderà and Martin Malmsten (Dept. of Pharmacy) and Søren Skou (Xenocs); with research projects covering discovery, formulation and delivery of biopharmaceutics, amyloid research, enzymatic catalysis, membrane proteins, disordered systems and colloid research, as well as technological and methodological developments within the use of solution scattering.

In addition to the core collaborators, the facility is open to a broader user community, facilitating the use of SAXS in a range interdisciplinary research projects in the region. The facility is located at the Department of Drug Design within the Research Section for Structural Biology.

Your job
The main tasks are user support and maintenance, this includes attracting and training new users, advising on, e.g., sample preparation and requirements, support with data collection and assistance with data analysis on selected collaborative projects. Your tasks also include managing the requests and scheduling, user accounts, as well as providing material for annual reports on the use and outcomes, organizing annual user meetings, contributing to training courses and outreaches activities promoting the facility. You will be responsible for the daily maintenance of the instrument and contribute to its continued developments.

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic staff scientist with solid technical knowledge as well as capabilities to support and extend the network around the facility. Specifically, we are looking for the following competencies and experience:

Essential experience and skills

  • You have documented experience in SAXS or related techniques for biological samples (e.g. SANS; crystallography; fiber diffraction; surface scattering or diffraction)
  • You have an active interest in instrumentation and/or method development.
  • You have proven an ability to envision, plan and execute research projects
  • Service-minded with clear communication and networking skills
  • Good English skills, written and spoken

Desirable experience and skills

  • Knowledge of protein expression and purification is an advantage.
  • Experience with biophysical techniques for characterization of biological macromolecules
  • You have a PhD in structural biology, biophysics, biochemistry, or related.

Terms of salary and employment
The employment as ‘staff scientist’ (AC-TAP) is a 2 year full time and fixed-term position. Starting date is 1 April 2024 or after agreement. Employment will be in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). The monthly salary will be based on the number of years of work experience (seniority) with the possibility to negotiate a salary supplement based on prior experiences and qualifications. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.
