Social research on active participation in leisure sports in Flanders from a policy approach

Job description

Offer DescriptionActive participation in sports and other forms of physical activity during leisure time appears to be gaining popularity in our society. Research shows that never before so many people in Flanders have been active in leisure-time sports and physical activity. Not only on a sporting level but also from a broader societal perspective, just think of its health-related as well as social benefits, the importance of participating in leisure-time sports is increasingly underlined. In order to get as many people as possible active in sports, the government has been conducting an activating awareness policy during the past decades. To give shape to this policy, insights from scientific sports participation research are used. A lot of data on sports participation are available and can be supplemented. These include data from long-term cross-sectional surveys, but also data from government monitors and administrative databases. The present doctoral project focuses on data-driven sports policy in Flanders. It focuses on three approaches, namely ‘renewal’, ‘deepening’ and ‘broadening’. In the ‘renewal’ approach, the focus is on future exploration concerning the monitoring of sports participation. Here, we strive for a strong conceptual and methodological framework that will allow mapping (trends in) sports participation in Flanders in a scientifically sound manner. For the in-depth part, the intention is to carry out more in-depth analyses based on already available measuring instruments and data. More sophisticated research and analysis techniques, to be developed within the framework of the PhD, should make it possible to gain insights not yet known. With ‘broadening’, the aim is to conduct complementary analyses parallel to the approaches of renewal and deepening, based on available data as well as new data to be collected. In this way, it will be possible to study the sports participation behaviour of groups that have not or little been covered up to now on the basis of empirical material. Based on the insights gained, a new sports segmentation framework will then be able to be developed. The results of the research will also form the basis for a tool to support sports policy in Flanders and for policy advice to the Flemish sports sector.Where to apply WebsiteRequirementsResearch Field Economics Education Level Master Degree or equivalentResearch Field Sociology Education Level Master Degree or equivalentLanguages DUTCH Level ExcellentLanguages ENGLISH Level ExcellentAdditional InformationBenefitsWe offer a full-time, fixed-term PhD fellowship for one year, renewable subject to positive evaluation after one year up to a maximum of four years in total.
