Job summary

The Creative Industries team in DCMS is a friendly, dynamic team of 28 people working on a fast-paced, high profile and hugely interesting policy agenda.

Our team works closely with industry to deliver the goals set out by Government focused on driving growth, building talent, and ensuring the creative industries continue to benefit individuals, communities, the environment and the UK.

Creative industry sectors we support include: film and high-end TV, video games and e-sports, music, publishing, fashion and design. We also develop policy related to cross-cutting areas including AI and innovation, R&D, investment, skills, trade and international activity.

Job description

This is a fast-paced and varied role in a small, high-performing team leading on creative skills policy. The team’s focus is on ensuring that all creative industries sectors have the education, skills and workforce they need to deliver sustained growth. The role involves working across DCMS and Whitehall, as well as with senior external stakeholders to deliver the industry and workforce ambitions of the Government. 

Current projects in the portfolio include leading the strategic development and delivery of the Creative Advisory Group (which supports post-16 technical education pathways into the Creative Industries), driving forward research into specialist creative education provision, and representing the interests of creative industries stakeholders in school-age creative skills policy development.

The post holder will:

  • Work closely with industry, DCMS analysts, sector leads and other government departments (particularly the Department for Education) to ensure the education and skills ambitions of the Government are met.
  • Provide expert analysis and policy development on current and future creative industry skills needs in order to support fiscal and non-fiscal proposals at Spending Review.

The post holder will have some task management responsibility of a policy advisor at EO level who works across the broader creative economy team. 

Person specification

The ideal candidate would have the following key skills and experience:

Essential requirements:

  • Strong evidence of seeing the big picture, you will need to develop strategy and policy that is informed by political, social and economic considerations and analysis aligned with the wider Organisational agenda.
  • Strong evidence of working together and encouraging joined up team work as well as establishing professional relationships with a range of stakeholders. Developing these relationships to enable collaboration and sharing of information, resources and support.
  • Strong evidence of communicating and influencing clearly, using different communication styles to develop effective relationships with, advise and influence stakeholders across and outside organisations.
  • Strong evidence of the ability to deliver at pace, prioritising successfully to ensure high quality work is delivered on time. Working through conflicting demands and positively influencing progress on the team’s top priorities.

Desirable skills:

  • Experience and interest in culture and the creative industries
  • Experience and interest in creative education and skills, including awareness of talent pipeline issues
  • Ability to identify, analyse and assess a range of evidence to inform effective decisions
