The CMS Secretariat has better knowledge and understanding of the impact of the COP14 media strategy, has final analysis and figures regarding the launch of the State of the World’s Migratory Species report, and can use that knowledge to improve future media engagements in order to raise the profile of the Convention and awareness of migratory species.

Duties and Responsibilities
The consultant will be responsible for performing the following duties, as required: 1. Analyzing the media impact of the COP14 report launch • Research, analyze and report on the impact of the media launch of the State of the World’s Migratory Species report, launched at the opening of COP14 2. Providing lessons learned from the media impact • Using the consultant’s own media expertise, provide a set of lessons learned for future media launches and recommendations for improving the Secretariat’s workflow for media relations. 3. Facilitating a day of professional media training • Provide a training to the Executive Secretary and senior staff members on preparing and conducting media interviews.
Qualifications/special skills
Organizational Settings: The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) is a global intergovernmental treaty aimed at the conservation and sustainable use of migratory species and their habitats. Numerous additional intergovernmental instruments on migratory species conservation have been adopted under the broad umbrella of CMS which are supported by the CMS Secretariat. In addition, two regional agreements on migratory species adopted under CMS have their own Secretariats which are co-located with the CMS Secretariat in Bonn – the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) and the Agreement on the Conservation of European Populations of Bats (EUROBATS). The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. In the present context, UNEP provides the administrative functions for the CMS, AEWA and EUROBATS Secretariats. This post is located in the CMS Secretariat at the Bonn duty station in Germany. One of the major milestones of the CMS 14th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP14) was the launch of the State of the World’s Migratory Species (SOWMS) report. Significant communications efforts to disseminate the report and to track its impact took place in the lead up to and during the COP. The CMS Secretariat requires a highly experienced consultant 1) to support the final steps of this work, including management of media engagement, impact analysis and providing lessons learned and recommendations, 2) and to provide a day of media training session for the Executive Secretary and senior staff members who have a role speaking to the media. At least 10 years of working experience in the area of international media relatons or professional journalism is required. Experience in media monitoring, experience and strong network with international media outlets are required. Experience with UN agencies and other international organizations is highly desirable. Experience in a field related to the environment, sustainable development or biodiversity conservation is desired.
Languages
Academic Qualifications: Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in University degree in Journalism and Mass Media, Public Relations and Communication, Business Management, international relations, or any other relevant social science field. A first-level university in combination with 4 additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Experience: At least 10 years of working experience in the area of international media relatons or professional journalism is required. Experience in media monitoring, experience and strong network with international media outlets are required. Experience with UN agencies and other international organizations is highly desirable. Experience in a field related to the environment, sustainable development or biodiversity conservation is desired. Language: English, French and Spanish are the working languages of the CMS Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
