In the role of Senior Legal Counsel, you will provide expert legal advice across a range of complex business operations, maintaining the highest level of compliance and legal protection for the UK business with applicable laws and regulations, the Corporate Code of Ethics and all other relevant internal policies and procedures
As Senior Legal Counsel you will work closely with all business functions through business partnering activities, providing proactive legal advice aligned with business objectives.
The successful candidate will be a Qualified Solicitor (England & Wales) and have experience of working in-house in a commercial and, ideally, highly regulated setting.

Purpose
As a key member of the Legal & Compliance Business Unit, you will provide expert legal advice across a range of complex business operations, maintaining the highest level of compliance and legal protection for the UK business with applicable laws and regulations, the Corporate Code of Ethics and all other relevant internal policies and procedures. You will lead on complex legal matters and contribute to strategic decision-making. This role also involves managing and mentoring members of the Legal team to drive excellence in legal and compliance support across the business and contribute to their own career development.
Profile

Qualified Solicitor (England & Wales)

Experience of working in-house in a commercial and, ideally, highly regulated setting

Line management experience (desirable but not essential)

Strong analytical, problem solving and communication skills, with a desire to work collaboratively with all departments and establish positive working relationships both internally and externally with key stakeholders
-
Technically strong and commercially minded, with a creative and business-oriented approach to align legal strategies with the organisation’s goals
-
Significant experience of, and high proficiency in, data protection law, drafting and negotiating commercial contracts and intellectual property

Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast paced, ever-changing environment
-
Preferable, but not essential, knowledge and experience of the ABPI Code of Practice and the UK laws and regulations relating to the pharma, life sciences or healthcare sector

Experience of designing, leading and delivering projects and training initiatives

Fluent English, both written and spoken
Main Responsibilities
-
Draft, review and negotiate a variety of contracts, including supply chain, third party procurement, sponsorship and clinical trial agreements, working closely with the Procurement function where relevant

Provide guidance on compliance with UK and EU data protection laws and advise on data privacy risks and policies

Ensure adherence to the ABPI Code of Practice, and other pharmaceutical regulations and industry standards, managing legal risks related to marketing, advertising, and product promotion and distribution

Provide expert advice on legal issues and risks facing the business to Head Office functions, R&D and field sales personnel, dealing with day to day ad hoc legal questions or queries on relevant internal policies and procedures

Working closely with all business functions through business partnering activities, providing proactive legal advice aligned with business objectives

Manage one direct report in all aspects of their legal work and development, and contribute to the development of the team as a whole, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement

Support the development and delivery of training materials to company employees on legal topics, critical policies and procedures

Support internal and external audits and investigations as required and help communicate findings/recommendations/key learnings and identifying potential improvements or change

Take an active involvement in the production, updating and training out of policies and procedures and regularly review, update and develop precedent documents

Support the management of an IP portfolio which includes patents and trademarks

Identify, assess, and mitigate legal risks to safeguard the organisation’s interests

Assist Legal & Compliance Senior Director as required on various topics (including, for example, data protection, competition and anti-bribery and corruption law)

Establish and maintain meticulous record keeping systems

Comply with the Company Code of Conduct
In addition to the responsibilities listed above, ad hoc project work may be given as part of annual objectives and a structured development programme based on an individual’s training needs.
