- Management of laboratory projects including, as necessary, supervision of sub-contractors and clients.
- Preparation and review of technical reports.
- Undertaking of desk-based studies and small-scale research.
- Working to Standards and UKAS-accredited test procedures.
- Managing, supervising and training of junior technical staff.
- Assistance with the specification, design and construction of test rigs; and the installation and calibration of measurement instrumentation.
- Working within the HVAC Team and the wider BRE Group to develop and expand its portfolio of testing and consultancy work.
- Working to defined budgets and timescale deadlines.
Your profileSome skills that will be necessary for this position include;Essential:
- Educated to degree or equivalent level and above in an engineering or science related subject.
- Hands-on practical experience and/or demonstrable practical aptitude and interest in application of scientific and engineering principles to solving real-world problems – ideally, but not necessarily, within building services.
- Good understanding of thermodynamics as applied to building structures, the internal environment and within building services systems.
- General understanding of the principles of how energy efficient ventilation products and heat pumps work and an appreciation of their role in the UK agenda for Net Zero.
- Excellent customer relationship skills.
- Good verbal and written presentation and report writing skills.
- Good organisational and accurate record keeping.
- Self-motivated and focussed but also having the ability to work in a team.
- Proficient in use of MS Office software for reports, data analysis and presentations.
- Able to undertake practical laboratory work including use of access towers and ladders when required.
- Willingness to travel in the UK as required.
- Holder of a valid UK driving licence.
Desirable:
- Experience of working in a building-services engineering related environment such as contracting, research or commercial consultancy.
- Commercial/financial awareness and business development experience.
- Sound knowledge/interest in current affairs relating to the environment and buildings and the attendant government policy implications. In particular, knowledge of the social, economic and political issues around heating, fuel types and equity.
- Experience of computer programming using a high-level language for numerical analysis, data acquisition or control.
- Experience or knowledge of domestic heat pumps currently on the market – including their installation, operation/control and efficiency.
- Able to read electrical drawings for products.
- Able and willing to participate actively in the improvement of existing commercial testing work, and to assist in identifying, planning and executing method development in order to realise new income streams.
