Undertake accurate data recording and respond to scientific requests. Provide advice, training and guidance to Animal Support Technicians, Animal Technicians and researchers.Main Duties and Responsibilities1. Manage and maintain complex animal breeding colonies to continue production of high quality animals of known heritage. Includes meeting with researchers to discuss study requirements, undertake data recording and tasks in databases, in a timely manner and accurately recorded.2. Provide technical assistance in a variety of routine and specialist licenced and non-licensed procedures for researchers, providing surgical and aseptic technique support and clinical monitoring of experimental animals.3. Provide and oversee the husbandry and care of animals and ensure animal holding rooms are maintained to appropriate standards and in line with Home Office legislation and Guidance. This includes feeding and watering, changing of cages/tanks/enclosures, completing and recording daily welfare checks. Daily application and practical knowledge of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act, to ensure compliance and the highest standards of welfare.4. Administrative duties including keeping detailed records required for legislative compliance and quality assurance (e.g. recording animal environment).5. Support the Facility manager and Deputy to ensure the smooth operational running of the facility. Ordering specialist consumables and ensuring technical equipment is operational (e.g. anaesthetic machines, aquaculture pumps).6. Provide training and guidance to staff and researchers in non-licensed and husbandry procedures, use of databases and correct use of specialist equipment. Delegate routine duties and supervise Animal Support Technicians and Animal Technicians to ensure duties are completed in a timely manner. Depending on area of expertise and experience, may also include training in specialist licenced technical procedures.7. Understanding of and adherence to the University and Departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPS) for operational and quality assurance purposes and to ensure compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act and other relevant legislation. Includes drafting and implementing SOPS as required.8. Undertake Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer (NACWO) training where applicable and attend the Animal Welfare Ethical Review Body (AWERB) as required.Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and ExperienceKnowledge/QualificationsEssential:A1 Either: Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 7 (Advanced Higher / Scottish Vocational Qualification level 3, Higher National Certificate) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.A2 Good working knowledge of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act and the roles and responsibilities of Licensees working under the Act.A3 Home Office Personal Licence Holder.A4 Certificated attendance and assessment at an accredited Personal Licensee training courseA5 Good knowledge of procedures regarding safety, security, personnel matters etc.A6 Security clearance for working in animal facilities (will be arranged before appointment).Desirable:B1 Degree qualifications in an appropriate animal or biomedical science-related subject.B2 Regular Continuing Professional Development.B3 NACWO Qualification.B4 Obtained or commenced IAT qualifications.SkillsEssential:C1 Highly competent in animal handling, husbandry and breeding, for a range of species.C2 Skills in a range of technical procedures, including licensed experimental procedures, in a range of species.C3 Skills in the application of asepsis and containment of infection.C4 Demonstrable ability to communicate and build relationships with a wide range of stakeholders at different levels.C5 Competent IT and numeracy skills.C6 Undertake further training and assessments as required.ExperienceEssential:E1 Experience of working as an animal husbandry or research support technician in an animal facility.E2 Experience in staff supervision and training skills.Desirable:F1 Experience in the maintenance of complex transgenic breeding programs.F2 Experience in surgical techniques.Terms and ConditionsSalary will be UoG Grade 5, £26,038 – £30,505 per annum, plus shift allowance.This post is full time (35 hours per week) and open ended. Shifts are normally Monday to Friday however you will be required to work 1 weekend in 3 (3 hours on a Saturday and 3 hours on a Sunday, paid at the relevant enhanced rate). Your rota will be confirmed to you by your line manager. Your line manager will engage with you on an annual basis and will confirm your rota for the next calendar year in October of each year.Closing date: Wednesday 22nd January 2025
