Regeringen

Job description

The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) is a partner in the newly initiated project entitled ECCO, funded by JPI Water, and leads the work package of compound events. The project addresses compound floods across northern Europe but with a core Danish focus. It aims to expand our knowledge of the occurrence patterns of compound events that cause flooding and further develop methods to estimate the present-day and future risks and impacts of such events.About the researcher positionWithin ECCO, DMI has an opening to join the Weather Research Department in a full-time two-year researcher position. The successful applicant will be joining the research unit doing regional ocean and precipitation research, but will collaborate also with the units of Numerical Weather Prediction and Hydrology and Flooding. Collaboration and coordination with the other research department at DMI (NCKF), hosting the climate service The Danish National Climate Atlas ( and doing extreme precipitation analyses with ECCO, will also be included in the work. The work of the successful applicant will build upon existing early-stage compound approaches to further advance methodological approaches, study areas, variables, cross-WP results, end-user engagement and by incorporating climate change, to advance state-of-the-art compound research and ensure optimal stakeholder uptake. In doing so, hazard type assessments, process dynamics and the quantification of compound flood risks will be core tasks. The work will be on a combination of point/case scales as well as utilizing larger gridded datasets such as from reanalysis data and RCMs. The assessment of compounds in ECCO also involves statistical approaches to assess e.g. variable dependency structures, expand the data basis and to evaluate joint recurrence levels. The Weather Research Department has its core responsibilities in doing development and research towards operational purposes, but a key component of the staff members also do externally funded projects with an applied purpose. The working environment at the research departments at DMI is first and foremost highly collaborative and positive towards all colleagues. We also seek a candidate that has a high degree of academic curiosity and independency in terms of developing and pursuing research ideas. We therefore require candidates to clearly highlight, within the application, your experiences and skills modelling, data processing, computational environments, coding (languages), research and publications as well as educational grading sheets and certificates.Requirements:

  • PhD degree within physical-statistical geosciences (oceanography, earth physics, geo- or environmental engineering, physical geography or similar)
  • Or, alternatively, a master degree alongside a vast research experience
  • Experience with developing code, such as in Python, for data-processing of geoscience data (preferably in a Linux environment), such as netcdf and grib, is an advantage
  • Research experience and a strong track record in peer reviewed output is a clear advantage
  • Good communication skills in both oral and written English
  • Capacity of working in a team together with a good team spirit
