Researcher in Tamil epigraphy M/F
Offer DescriptionThe CNRS is recruiting a full-time postdoctoral researcher in epigraphy and history of the Tamil region to play a central role in a “Synergy” type project of the European Research Council (ERC) funded under the Horizon 2020 program of the European Union.The DHARMA project (The Domestication of “Hindu” Asceticism and the Religious Making of South and Southeast Asia) concerns the political, economic and social history of Hinduism. It is coordinated by Emmanuel Francis, research fellow at the Center for Indian and South Asian Studies (CESAH, UMR 8077, joint research unit under the joint supervision of the CNRS and the EHESS) as part of a consortium involving three other partners, namely the Humboldt University of Berlin, the French School of the Far East (EFEO) in Paris and the University “L’Orientale” of Naples.The postdoctoral researcher in Tamil epigraphy will be a member of Task-Force A “The Tamil South” of the DHARMA project. Under the supervision of Emmanuel Francis, he will conduct historical research based on Tamil epigraphic sources in connection with the research topics of the DHARMA project (attach a 2-page research project).
He will be trained in the encoding of inscriptions in Epidoc (TEI-XML subset) and will encode Tamil inscriptions, not only from his research corpus, but also from other corpora of Tamil inscriptions.
Within a team of historians and epigraphists, his main mission will be to conduct research on the premodern history of the Tamil South, based on epigraphic sources, in connection with the research topics of the DHARMA project. Relevant research topics include, among others, religious history, state formation, development of social institutions, relations between religion and politics, environment and economy, emergence of complex cultural forms.
He will produce original research on the early history of Tamil, drawing on his own study of primary sources such as inscriptions and literary texts.
He will also actively contribute to the online database of inscriptions, which is the main deliverable of the DHARMA project.The Postdoctoral Fellow in Tamil Epigraphy will
– conduct research on primary sources and their historical contexts
– actively contribute to the development of Tamil materials in the DHARMA database
– write and publish research articles/chapters in peer-reviewed journals or books
– participate in DHARMA project workshopsBased on his research project, which is based on the study of a sub-corpus of Tamil inscriptions relevant to the DHARMA project, the Postdoctoral Fellow in Tamil Epigraphy will
– encode and tag this sub-corpus into EpiDoC (TEI-XML) files that will be included in the DHARMA database
– produce metadata files
– encode and tag other corpora of Tamil inscriptions for the DHARMA database and produce metadata files for them
