Researcher in Metallurgy M/F
Offer DescriptionWithin the framework of the ISAC (Innovative System for Actinides Conversion) project of the France Relance initiative, preliminary concepts of molten salt reactor (MSR) capable of incinerating minor actinides have to be proposed in connection with prospective evolutions of the French nuclear fleet (stabilisation or reduction of the plutonium and americium inventory, minimization of the deep storage footprint, …) and the constraints linked to the nuclear fuel cycle (plutonium and minor actinides inventories). The specificities of molten salt reactors will be exploited to design innovative transmutation strategies. The ISAC project aims to investigate the performance of the MSR and the associated cycle for this mission as well as the main obstacles of this reactor (resistance of materials, especially in terms of corrosion resistance). Indeed, one of the challenges for the development of the MSR is the choice of structural materials and the demonstration of their resistance under irradiation, in temperature, under thermal stress, in a molten salt environment and over time. Industrial but also innovative metallic materials have been pre-selected. The work of the present postdoctoral position will consist of studying 1. The effects of thermal aging on the microstructure and mechanical properties of these materials, 2. The damage of these materials in the presence of molten salts and mechanical stress.Main activities
In collaboration with the permanent staff of the UMET laboratory and in collaboration with the UCCS laboratory, the candidate will:
– Carry out a bibliographic search of the studied materials taking into account the subject of the ISAC project,
– perform the thermal aging of materials,
– Study their microstructure (XRD, SEM-EDX-EBSD and possibly TEM) before and after thermal aging in order to characterize and understand, with thermodynamic considerations, the evolution of the microstructure of the studied materials,
– Carry out mechanical tests in temperature,
– Participate in the definition of suitable protocols for molten salt tests of materials under stress and participate in their implementation,
– Study and understand the damage of the materials in the presence of molten salts under mechanical stress by SEM-EDX-EBSD, XRD analyzes and thermochemical considerations.
Other activities-
– Present the results during ISAC project working group meetings
– Communicate scientific results in the form of conference communications and publications
– Supervise students who will work in the project. The mission is part of the ISAC (Innovative System for Actinides Conversion) project of the France Relance plan, and more particularly within the framework of task 5.3 relating to the “materials”. The work will mainly take place within the UMET laboratory, located at the University of Lille (Cité Scientifique in Villeneuve d’Ascq). The immersion tests in molten salt will be carried out in the UCCS laboratory, located on the same site. The work will be done in collaboration with the other laboratories of task 5.3: CEA Saclay, Framatome, EDF and Orano.
