The goal of this project is to provide a radically new history of early modern Pacific trade by critically re-evaluating conventionally used sources, examining hitherto neglected historical archives and records in a range of Asian and European languages, and analysing recent archaeological evidence using new methodologies and perspectives. The project is led by Prof. Dr. Angela Schottenhammer (PI) (Department of History, KU Leuven). You will be part of an international interdisciplinary team with experts in history, archaeology, and historical geography, which includes a strong collaboration between Ghent University (Department of Geography; Cartography & GIS research group, Prof. Van de Weghe, responsible for the geomatics component of the project) and KU Leuven.More specifically, you will be assigned to two tasks during your employment:Completion and optimisation of the TRANSPACIFIC spatiotemporal platform ( On this platform, the spatiotemporal data (routes, events, flows of goods and networks) available in the historical project database are visualised on various thematic web pages (using maps, tables, charts, etc.).The analytical evaluation of project-related data on disease spread, risk modelling and creation of ‘medical maps’ (e.g. visualisation of results in interactive web maps, graphs and tables).You will thus be the crucial link in the project team for the visualisation and further analysis of the data. In this way, you will be able to make a valuable contribution to new scientific insights into the Transpacific history from the 16th to the 18th century.WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FORDIPLOMA REQUIREMENTSYou have at least a Master’s degree in Geography & Geomatics (or any other Master’s degree with a strong scientific component and link to computer science).For this position, you should have some basic skills. The following competences are important:TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

  • You have a very good knowledge of English.
  • An interest in history and archaeology is a plus.
  • You have a good knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
  • You have experience with GIS software (QGIS and/or ArcGIS Pro) for performing analyses and creating maps.
  • Experience with other geographical data management tools (e.g. FME) is a plus.
  • You have already acquired skills in (spatial) statistical analysis of data and are willing to develop these skills further (e.g. network-based models such as chronnets).
  • A thorough knowledge of Python and its main libraries (for data analysis) is required.
  • You have experience with database management (PostgreSQL and extensions such as PostGIS).
  • You have already had a taste of the domain of Web Development (HTML, CSS and JavaScript). More specifically, you are interested in working with the web application framework Django (Python-based), the user interface library React and the web map library Leaflet (both JavaScript-based).
  • A minimal knowledge of the version control platform GitHub is recommended

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a contract of definite duration for a period of 4 months (01.11.24 to 28.02.25) with the prospect of an extension of up to 12 months with an appointment at KU Leuven (and collaboration with UGent), in the framework of a project on the historical spread of diseases in Southeast and East Asia.
  • In addition, depending on the outcome of a project application, a percentage employment of up to 1 year in a project for the development and application of GeoAI tools is possible. Knowledge of Spanish is an advantage here.
  • Your contract will start on 1/11/2024 at the earliest.
  • Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale WM1 to WM4 (if you hold a Master’s degree) or salary scale PD1 to PD4 (if you hold a doctorate).
