Research specialist position (role in the project: Technician)
Research specialist position (role in the project: Technician)Recruitment for the project “RNA and Cell Biology Platform for Research and Innovation in Medicine (RACE-PRIME)” (grant agreement no. FENG.02.01-IP.05-T003/23) implemented within the framework of the International Research Agendas funded by the European Funds for Smart Economy programme, for the position of Research specialist to carry out research work in the cell biology area under the direction of Prof. Marta Miączyńska, head of the Laboratory of Cell Biology at the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw ( ), in collaboration with Dr Aleksandra Kołodziejczyk (Laboratory of Cellular Genomics). The aim of RACE-PRIME is to establish IIMCB as a world-class Center of Excellence in RNA and Cell Biology. The goal of RACE-PRIME is to translate basic research findings, e.g., for developing new therapies, diagnostic methods, discovering new therapeutic targets, or identifying molecules with desired properties to be developed into drugs. The impact of the gut microbiota on human health is undeniable. The liver is particularly interesting in the context of the microbiota because of its exposure to bacterially derived products. Together with nutrients from digested food, microbiota-derived molecules and metabolites, reach the liver via portal circulation. This makes the liver uniquely exposed to microbiota, without having direct contact with live bacteria. In the gut, we have hundreds of different bacterial strains and each of them produces many different products that can be beneficial or detrimental to the host. Our understanding of which bacteria exert such positive or negative effects is limited. Hence, there is a need for a system that will allow testing the effects of bacteria in a high throughput way. Studying interactions between microbiota and liver is usually done in animal models, which greatly limits the number of samples. Hence, we plan to establish an in vitro model with the key characteristics of the gut-liver axis and then use it to test if and how bacterially derived metabolites act on the liver.
Job description: Our overarching aim is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the gut-liver axis in health and disease with the goal of improving clinical outcomes. The goals of this study are: (1) to establish a transwell-based cell culture system to mimic the gut-liver axis, (2) to identify bacterial strains producing metabolites that pass through the epithelial barrier and impact the liver, and (3) to characterise mechanisms of this interaction. In this project, you will use – advanced multicomponent mammalian cell cultures, genomics and microbiological techniques such as anaerobic bacteria culturing. There will be an opportunity to work with mice as animal models of gastrointestinal diseases.Requirements: in biological sciences or related field. * knowledge of molecular and cell biologySelection criteria: * Technical competencies, experience and alignment of specialized knowledge with the position.
Candidates will be selected through an open competition, in accordance with the principles set out in the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers, which are part of the HR Excellence in Research strategy. We offer: * Full-time employment contract, initially for a period of 6 months with the possibility of extension.
How to apply: * Please send your applications to the email address:
