Why this role mattersThis is a senior technical expert role in Research and Network Strategy which shapes BT’s future technology direction in the specific technology domain, with new and emerging technologies, extracting the business opportunities such technologies offer BT. This role is responsible for delivering high quality research helping BT achieve its business objectives.This role is based in Bristol or Ispwich.Our hybrid working model means you will be required to be in the office 3 days per week.You’ll have the following responsibilities

  • Domain expert responsible for the delivery of world-class research within the Network Infrastructure research programme.
  • Accountable for generating proposals and managing novel research projects delivering business value and contributing to the RaNS goals.
  • Responsible for intellectual property creation and helping others across the team develop skills in that area.
  • Manages collaborative research projects or other research collaborations as appropriate.
  • Accountable for appropriate standards contribution, industry influencing and direction setting within the area of specialism for the team.
  • Responsible for authoring thought leadership technical papers, capturing intellectual property.
  • Supervision of professionals, graduates and post-graduate student placements and secondments

Experience

  • Technical domain expert: Considerable (10+ years) experience successfully pioneering new and emerging network systems technologies, with breadth and depth of knowledge across a range of technologies in the Cloud Infrastructure Research technical domain. (MANDATORY)
  • Research reputation: World class standing and recognition in the Cloud Infrastructure Research technical domain for example, authoring peer reviewed papers, generating patents, or creating experience of keynote speaking and being a panelist in high profile conferences and events. (MANDATORY)
  • Horizon scanning – Detects early signs of potentially important developments through a systematic examination of potential threats and opportunities, with emphasis on new technology and network Strategy. (MANDATORY)
  • Story-telling with data: strong skills in building the case for change, drawing on data and analytical techniques where appropriate, and communicating this to business audiences (MANDATORY)
  • Business acumen: Knowledgeable in business strategy and the drivers of organizational performance, including people drivers of performance and financial literacy (e.g. business KPIs, business cases) (PREFERRED)

In Addition: Technical domain expert 10+ years working experience in the Cloud Infrastructure technology domain
Technical profile:

  • NFV/Virtualisation core principles including performance optimisation (MANDATORY)
  • Infrastructure/hardware aspects of telco cloud (MANDATORY)
  • Network fundamentals (MANDATORY)
  • Software-defined networking and its role in telco cloud deployments (MANDATORY)
  • Linux: Admin, OS/kernel (MANDATORY)
  • Cloud native design principles applied to telco cloud/network functions (MANDATORY)
  • Automation principles applicable to telco cloud and cloud native infrastructure (PREFERRED)
  • Other (non CPU) hardware in telco cloud infrastructure, e.g. GPU, DPU, accelators etc (PREFERRED)
  • Data centre design fundamentals (PREFERRED)
  • AI/ML and applicability to telco cloud infrastructure, network management and optimisation (PREFERRED)
  • Tooling/instrumentation, with sound appreciation of open source methods (DESIRABLE)
  • Software development (DESIRABLE)
  • APIs and data modelling (DESIRABLE)
