We are seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist to join our team and contribute to groundbreaking fundamental research and deployment in AI for Education and Learning.Our team aims to make fundamental advances to methods in multimodal foundation models for education and to deploy new experiences and products for learners of all types. We are interested in candidates demonstrating expertise on a broad range of topics relevant to the team, for example multimodal generative models, new algorithms and architectures for training and finetuning, human-based and automatic system evaluations, sociotechnical AI and human computer interactions, interactive tutoring systems, and learning science. You will collaborate closely with other leading researchers across Google, contributing to the development of cutting-edge generative models and translating research into products across Google and externally.About usArtificial Intelligence could be one of humanity’s most useful inventions. We use our technologies for widespread public benefit and scientific discovery, and collaborate with others on critical challenges, ensuring safety and ethics are the highest priority.The roleWe’re looking for a versatile Research Scientist, at ease both with figuring out how to approach new research questions, and the technical implementation of research ideas.Key responsibilities:

  • Come up with ideas to solve new problems/improve performance of existing models, e.g., improving or evaluating the pedagogical capabilities of models, or measuring learning outcomes.
  • Develop technical solutions to test these ideas and assess performance.
  • Report and present research findings and developments including results clearly and efficiently.
  • Contribute to team collaborations to meet ambitious research goals.
  • Engage with application and product needs, to inform research decisions.

About you:In order to set you up for success as a Research Scientist at Google DeepMind, we are looking for the following skills and experience:

  • PhD in machine learning or closely related field.
  • A proven track record of publications.
  • Hands-on experience with Python.
  • Commitment/experience/expertise in education and learning.
  • Ability to communicate technical ideas effectively, e.g. through discussions, whiteboard sessions, written documentation.

In addition, any of the following would be an advantage:

  • Experience with both quantitative and qualitative research methods, evaluations and human studies.
  • Experience with fine-tuning (including RL methods) of foundation models.
  • Understanding of learning science, learning engineering, and digital education and learning.
  • Experience translating research innovations into product applications.
  • Understanding of safety and ethical needs in the use of foundation models.
