Salary: £34,980 to £42,978 Per annum
Full Time Fixed Term for 3 years

Reference: 2672624FPResearch fellow in compute and network infrastructure for event-triggered computeThe SONNETS project is a new £6.5M EPSRC programme grant led by the school of Electronics and Computer Science in the University of Southampton, in collaboration with Imperial College London, and Newcastle University. Over five years the project will create new tools, algorithms, and systems for monitoring and estimating UK national financial risk.We will build a digital shadow for the UKs economy which constantly ingests data from many sources, generates potential adverse scenarios, models and labels the scenarios, and uses new and existing machine learning methods to build intelligent and proactive risk models. The diverse set of modelling, learning, and data management components will run on a heterogenous cloud, using an approach called event triggered computing to execute and manage computation.About youYou should be an independent and creative researcher, with the ability to use theory and applied engineering to create and use complex computing systems. Your research will support the cloud-based integration of a diverse set of learning and modelling components developed within the project, building on your understanding of contemporary cloud computing and system development paradigms. You should have a PhD or equivalent experience in an area related to computational systems, either in theoretical or applied engineering. Due to the open ended nature of the research we do not require any specific research specialism, but you should have made research contributions in a related area, such as: networking, cloud architectures and systems, distributed computing, high-performance computing, or formal verification. You should have experience with high-performance programming language (e.g. C++, Rust, Go), or framework (CUDA, Tensorflow, MPI), with the ability to develop, maintain, and optimise complex systems. You will be collaborating with a large group of researchers, and should have experience in modern software development practises such as source control and testing. What we can offer you

The project consists of three universities (Southampton, Imperial, and Newcastle), and includes a diverse set of partners from government (IMF, FCA, BoE), finance and simulation (…), artificial intelligence (Turing Institute, …), and computing and networking (Intel, Microsoft, …). The long-term and open-ended nature of a programme grant means there are many opportunities to try out new approaches and ideas, and there are lots of opportunities to collaborate within the group and with partners to develop new skills. Independent and creative thinkers are encouraged, and there is substantial scope to develop and take ownership of the research and engineering aspects. As a university we aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive and are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity. We believe that we can only truly meet our objectives if we are reflective of society, so we are passionate about creating a working environment in which you are free to bring your whole self to work. With a generous holiday allowance as well as additional university closure days we are committed to supporting our staff and students and open to a flexible working approach.Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.’.RequirementsAdditional InformationWork Location(s)Number of offers available 1 Company/Institute UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON Country United Kingdom City Southampton GeofieldWhere to apply WebsiteContact CitySouthamptonSTATUS: EXPIRED
