The Biosensors group (Division MeBioS) within the Biosystems department (Group of Science, Engineering and Technology of KU Leuven) is looking for a Research Expert in the field of biosensors for in vitro diagnostics and life science research tools. The Research Expert will support the research line of the Biosensors group with respect to biosensing tools for improving the current in vitro diagnostics fields (e.g. infectious diseases, cancer, neurodegenerative disorders) as well as life science research tools (e.g. for single cell analyses). As such, the Research Expert will work at the interface between biology and technology.

Responsibilities

  • Perform research within the Biosensors group to develop innovative biosensing solutions for improved in vitro diagnostic systems (e.g. for infectious diseases, cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, among others) and life science research tools (e.g. for single cell analyses)
  • Collaborate with Research and Innovation Managers, postdoctoral researchers and PhD students within the group
  • Co-supervise PhD students together with the PI of the group
  • Maintain existing and develop new (inter)national collaborations with academic and industrial partners
  • Explore relevant funding opportunities to initiate new projects
  • Independently write academic as well as industrial projects (i.e. project ideation and writing, identification of specific funding-based requirements, budget planning, etc.)
  • Independently follow up granted projects, i.e. conduct the required research and keep track of the administrative tasks and reporting
  • Collaborate with industry to identify opportunities for commercialization of research and secure the necessary funding
  • Organize meetings with project partners, workshops and (inter)national conferences
  • Write publications, participate in conferences and contribute to other ways of dissemination of research (e.g.to wider public)

Profile

  • PhD in Bioscience Engineering with at least 3 years of relevant postdoctoral research experience
  • Expertise in development of molecular diagnostics and immunoassays and their implementation on different technology platforms
  • Expertise in DNA nanotechnology and its application in biosensors
  • Expertise in surface (bio)functionalization and characterization
  • Expertise in microfluidic systems for biosensing applications, specifically hands on experience with microfluidic design (autoCAD), microfabrication and microscopy
  • Expertise in mammalian as well as bacterial cell culture and cloning
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken
  • Experience in writing grant proposals (national, regional, EU) and patent applications
  • Experience in managing and coordinating research projects (with respect to the scientific progress, people management as well as reporting) among different units within and outside the organization
  • Experience in working within large academic and industrial consortia
  • Experience in presenting results and reports to third parties (companies, conferences)

Offer

  • Dynamic work environment at the most innovative university of Europe
  • You will work in an internationally recognized group (www.biosensors.be), combining state-of-the-art research in the biosensors field (and more specifically biosensors for in vitro diagnostics and life science research tools), project management and commercialization
  • Full time position as Research Expert with a contract of indefinite duration, starting in Spring 2023 (exact date to be determined mutually)
