Research Associate: Instrument Development

Job title:

Research Associate: Instrument Development

Company:

University of Manchester

Job description

Applications are invited for a position to undertake timely instrument development work on modern array spectrophotometers, in both spectral and retrieval modes, within a well-established, internationally regarded group. The successful candidate will also support the smooth running of the existing ultraviolet radiation and ozone instrument suite at the University of Manchester’s surface atmospheric radiation monitoring site, the delivery of quality assured data to a number of international databases, and augment data from the new instruments into existing protocols and processes. The role is funded by DEFRA and covers monitoring sites at Reading and Manchester. The successful candidate will work closely with the project’s senior scientist and may also liaise with DEFRA, the monitoring site staff, database managers and international bodies that determine the operating and reporting procedures for the data.

  • Familiarity with spectroradiometry and DOAS techniques, and calibration of radiometric instruments would be a strong advantage.
  • As the continued collection of high quality data is paramount the ability to be flexible with working hours, occasionally, is desirable, to enable vital tasks to be completed within the desired timeframe.
  • The post is based in Manchester, but a willingness to undertake short visits to other sites is required, and there may be the opportunity to attend international instrument intercomparisons. A clean driving licence is required.

There is also the possibility of a continuing role and opportunity for advancement, provided that future funding is available to continue the monitoring.
The Department of Earth and Environmental Science is committed to promoting equality and diversity, including the Athena SWAN charter for promoting diversity in careers in the STEMM subjects (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine) in higher education. The School (as it was in 2016) received a Silver Athena SWAN Award for its commitment to diversity in the workplace, and the School of Natural Sciences to which the Department now belongs was also recently awarded Athena SWAN Silver. We welcome applications from all sections of the community especially those historically underrepresented in academia and appointment will be made on merit.
