Applications are invited from experts in high-voltage test systems and high-voltage engineering to join an academic-industry collaboration between the University of Manchester and UK Power Networks (UKPN). This post offers an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic researcher to build on their existing research skills by being part of Project “Optimising the Selection of SF6 Alternatives for UK Distribution Network”.This Project will focus on developing an understanding of insulation performance for passive components, such as a 132 kV rated gas-insulated busbar/line, and current interruption performance and subsequent degradation of SF6 alternatives under high energy arcing for active components, such as a 11 kV load switches. The Project will assess the potential of developing a retro-fill solution using SF6 alternatives within the UKPN’s existing SF6-containing equipment.This full-time post is available as soon as possible and is fixed-term for 24 months. The appointed post holder will be responsible to Dr Lujia (Tony) Chen and will play a key role in ensuring the successful delivery of research activities related to “Optimising the Selection of SF6 Alternatives for UK Distribution Network”, a multi-disciplinary project with partners from both industry and academia. The appointed candidate will have expertise in high-voltage engineering with research experience in SF6 alternatives. The post holder will focus on designing, developing and maintaining high-voltage test systems for carrying out experimental research on developing retro-fill solutions using SF6 alternatives.
