The School of Arts and Creative Technologies has a world class reputation for research in the screen industries, music and theatre. We are seeking a research associate to join the School to work on a new research project exploring virtual production and equality, diversity and inclusion.Co-Producing EDI Interventions for Virtual Production is a four year AHRC-funded research project which seeks to address structural inequalities in the film and television sector. Working with partner companies and freelancers, the project will co-produce, test and evaluate new ways of working in film and television that offer fairer and more inclusive forms of employment.This project builds on work undertaken as part of the Screen Industries Growth Network and XR Stories.
Role
The research associate will join the School of Arts and Creative Technologies and work with an interdisciplinary team led by Dr Jon Swords (project lead), with Prof Jude Brereton (co-lead), Dr Anna Einarsdottir (co-lead) and Dr Nina Willment (research associate). The main purpose of the role is to conduct qualitative research under the supervision of senior colleagues and to contribute to the production of research, industry and policy outputs. You will be expected to prepare ethics approvals; contribute to interview schedules and design; carry out qualitative research activities; code, analyse and manage data; take part in dissemination activities and prepare data for archiving. We also expect you to make substantial contributions to scholarly publications and to raise the public profile of the project through effective use of social media to maximise impact and sustainability of research outcomes.The post includes funding to support the successful candidate’s career development, and access to the University of York’s Building Research and Innovation Capacity team who provide a programme of training and support available for research staff and postdocs.
Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • PhD, or equivalent research experience in a subject relevant to the project
  • Knowledge in the field of equality, diversity and inclusion either in, or which can be applied to the UK screen industries
  • Knowledge of working practices in the creative industries
  • Knowledge of a range of qualitative research techniques and methodologies
  • Ability to write up research work for publication in high profile journals and engage in public dissemination
  • Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide ranging audience, both orally and in writing, using a range of media
