About us The mission of the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health is to improve the health and well-being of children, and the adults they will become, through world-class research, education and public engagement. The UCL GOS ICH, together with its clinical partner Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, forms the largest concentration of children’s health research outside North America. GOS ICH’s activities include active engagement with children and families, to ensure that our work is relevant and appropriate to their needs. GOS ICH generates the funding for our research by setting out our proposals in high quality applications to public, charitable and industrial funding bodies and disseminates the results of our research by publication in the medical and scientific literature, to clinicians, policy makers and the wider public. The Institute offers world-class education and training across a wide range of teaching and life learning programmes which address the needs of students and professional groups who are interested in and undertaking work relevant to child health.About the role The project will build on our recent publication of a new transgenic mouse model of a rare human spinal malformation for which Great Ormond Street Hospital is a national referral center (Maniou et al Development 2023). The successful candidate will be part of the Neurulation Biomechanics (Galea) lab (https://blogs.ucl.ac.uk/neurulation-biomechanics/), using advanced microscopy (e.g. Maniou et al PNAS 2021) and mouse transgenic models of human congenital malformations (e.g. Galea et al Nat Commun 2021).Previous post-docs in the Galea lab have gone on to secure a personal fellowship, industry and international post-doc in a collaborating lab. Research staff that do not have a PhD in the subject (as per the essential criteria in the person spec) will be appointed on Grade 6B (£37,332 – £39,980 per annum) and will have the title Research Assistant.About you We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic post-doctoral scientist motivated by scientific curiosity and enthusiasm for research with translational potential. The post would suit candidates with experience in cell/developmental biology, mouse models of development and disease, and able to work with human embryonic material donated for research. The successful candidate will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of cell/developmental biologists and clinicians supporting delivery of the research. They will take intellectual ownership of the research project, adapting its direction based on new findings, to maximise delivery on the project. They will be expected to present novel findings at conferences and contribute to the submission of peer-reviewed publications as first-author.
