About usThe UCL Institute of Archaeology is recognised as one of the leading academic departments of Archaeology and Heritage in the world. It is the largest department within its field in the UK. We are at the forefront of global archaeology, archaeological science, conservation, and heritage studies.The Central Asian Archaeological Landscapes (CAAL) project is a partnership between institutions from the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Republic of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Republic of Uzbekistan, and the People’s Republic of China (Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region), and works closely with the International Institute for Central Asian Studies ( ), based in Samarkand. The project has been made possible by the generosity of Arcadia – a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin ( ).Visit to find out more.About the roleThe postholder will undertake a number of activities to support the documentation, digitisation and open access dissemination of archaeological information from across the vast Central Asian region. The project draws together archaeological data from existing archives, country-based monument records, remote-sensing, field surveys, and other research databases, to create a Historic Environment Record for the whole region. The resulting datasets resides in individual country databases, and within an over-arching open access online geospatial inventory.The Research Assistant will be part of a team of researchers based at the UCL Institute of Archaeology, and many staff locally employed across Central Asia.The post is full-time (36.5 hours per week) and is available from 1 February 2025 until 30 September 2025.Further details about the role can be found in the job description and person specification in the link below.About youThe post holder will have an MA in Archaeology or a related discipline (e.g. geography, anthropology, history) and will have a demonstrated knowledge of and research experience in Central Asian archaeology. They will have experience in computational and/or digital approaches in archaeology and in using and maintaining databases.
