Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To provide independent, timely, accurate and appropriate clinical reports for a range of radiography examinations (plain film/MRI/CT) from a range of referral sources as appropriate to their scope of practice
- To practice at the standards and following the responsibilities expected of a reporting radiographer according to local reporting radiographer policy and procedures.
- To practice safely in a radiation working environment in accordance with IR(ME)R 2017 legislation.
- To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of their own work. To act as an independent radiographic practitioner and maintain professional standards defined by the HCPC and College of Radiographers (Registration and Code of Conduct)
- To assess the clinical justification of Radiography referrals, in line with national regulations IR(ME)R 2017 and local guidelines, where appropriate
- To autonomously carry out radiographic imaging using ionising radiation, acting as an operator under IR(ME)R 2017, and/or high strength magnetic field, ensuring the production of high quality images to enable accurate diagnoses whilst minimising radiation
- To be able to interpret Clinician’s requirements and determine the appropriate protocol, to liaise with the referral source where clarification is needed and to act as a point of advice for referrers.
- To monitor and maintain a safe working environment with specific regard to quality assurance, Infection control and general health and safety issues.
- To provide an efficient and effective service to both patients and other staff, whilst maintaining a high standard of patient care.
- To ensure appropriate infection control measures are undertaken including personal protection, appropriate cleaning of equipment (including blood and other body fluids) and changing of linen
- To ensure equipment is maintained in good working order, to trouble-shoot equipment faults, liaise with equipment manufactures in the event of equipment failure and to ensure records concerning these events are completed, informing the modality lead superintendent and service users as appropriate.
- To ensure all examinations have been recorded accurately, as per protocol, on the radiology information systems and relevant trust-wide platforms, adhering to the data protection act
- To support the radiation protection lead, alongside radiation protection supervisors, to continuously evaluate monitoring systems and practices according to local rules.
- To work as part of the Imaging workforce as required
- Provide detailed written and/or verbal reports to the referring clinicians on the interpretation of images and adapt technique where appropriate
- To act as a source of information and advice for peers, junior staff, student, referrers and medical staff within the department
- Establish, implement, maintain and develop an appropriate level of professional knowledge and understanding to enable the safe delivery of practice.
- To authorise and vet requests for specialist area, using departmental guidelines, efficiently managing any requests not suitable for authorisation
- Work closely with Doctors and other medical staff to ensure protocols are adhered to.
- To maintain close links with non-medical referrers and, at the request of the modality lead Superintendent and Consultant Radiologist, ensure they receive adequate training regarding their role as referrer and documented evidence is kept regarding the same for audit purposes.
- To have appropriate clinical knowledge to prioritise patient workload in order of clinical need.
- To prioritise their workload and that of junior staff
- To act as a point of advice for patients’ enquiries regarding their referral
- To professionally judge the quality of the images they and junior staff produce and ensure that it is fit for purpose, acting on any images that do not meet the required standard
