At ArtEZ, you will be part of Research & Valorisation, which consists of a director, support staff, 5 professorships (Art Education as Critical Tactics, Fashion, Music-based Therapies & Interventions, Tactical Design, Theory in the Arts), ArtEZ Studium Generale, ArtEZ Press and ArtEZ Business Center. Our research focuses on contributing to a diverse, inclusive and sustainable society from an artistic and cultural perspective developed from the motto ‘Another Kind of Futures’. In 2021, our research quality and outcomes were considered ‘excellent’, assessed by an independent committee within the framework of the Brancheprotocol Kwaliteitszorg Onderzoek (BKO).The position
Are you an expert in sustainable design, rooted in design practice, and do you have a demonstrable track record of research output? In addition, do you have experience in both product design and applied research including materials and space?We are seeking a Professor of Design to play a pivotal role in advancing research and innovation in circular and sustainable design. Your work will explore diverse contexts, applications, experiments, and functions of design, aiming to create a positive impact on people, the environment, and society. You bring a deep understanding of, and experience with, speculative design research, inter- and transdisciplinary collaborations, and the critical concepts of boundary crossing and boundary objects. The new professorship builds upon the legacy of the Tactical Design professorship, active from 2016 to 2024, which focused on sustainable design processes, innovative design research methods, and the role of design in driving societal transitions.As a professor, you will lead practice-based research within the domains of product design, material use, and spatial context in relation to sustainability and societal transitions. In this position, you will contribute to the further development of design research in which design is not limited to a designed end product or service but can be conceptualized as a visualized and materialized intervention in inter- and transdisciplinary research and innovation processes. The professorship Design is closely connected to education and as a professor you work on the creation and further development of collaborations with, by and for researchers, lecturers and students in the research-education-workplace relationships.ArtEZ is a critical and creative community of makers and designers. Research at ArtEZ is about exploring who we are, both as individuals and as part of the collective.Our mission centers on advancing the arts and enhancing societal well-being by seamlessly connecting research, education, and community impact.A key example of this commitment is our leadership in the eight-year SPRONG trajectory, dedicated to developing a robust infrastructure for research in sustainable fashion and textiles.This trajectory, titled NewTexEco, is a research community of five professorships that had been engaged in research on sustainable textiles for decades. The current collaboration consists of Fashion and Tactical Design of ArtEZ, Sustainable & Functional Textiles of Saxion, Fashion Research & Technology and Fashion Identity of Hogeschool van Amsterdam. Together with around 30 partners, we work towards a sustainable, circular and regenerative textile sector.As a professor, you will lead and engage with the NewTexEco community, having an active role in expanding and strengthening the transdisciplinary infrastructure, aiming to accelerate the transition into a more sustainable textile value chain.What will you do?

• Bridge builder: As the leader and cornerstone of the Design professorship, you will bridge education, research, and practice through innovative projects in product design, materials, and spatial challenges, inspiring researchers, educators, and students along the way.
• Research: You relate to professional practice and society through research and projects. You will develop and conduct design and practice research with a focus on sustainable applications of design, including experimental, speculative and social aspects related to it.
• Track record in research: You have a proven track record of research output related to the above-mentioned focus and know how to expand this with new research projects and grant applications, together with partners from different disciplines.
• Public-private collaboration: You will be a partner in NewTexEco, the research community of ArtEZ, HvA, Saxion and about 30 private and public consortium partners in the field of sustainable fashion and textiles. You maintain and strengthen these networks with knowledge institutions, companies, and governments, and stimulate public-private partnerships (quadruple helix) to promote knowledge development and innovation.
• Knowledge transfer: You will actively contribute to the connection between research and education, and art and science, by including researchers, lecturers and students in research projects and by contributing to the development of ArtEZ’s broad spectrum of study programs, particularly within the Art & Design Academies in Arnhem, Enschede and Zwolle. You will work with the other professors and researchers to strengthen the connection between research and education.
• Network development: You will build on existing networks, both national and international, and work with partners from different sectors to achieve impactful results in the aforementioned areas.

What qualities will you bring?

• Experience and vision: You are rooted in design practices and hold a strong vision on the future of circular product design, sustainable materials (textiles), the role of design in transitions, where use of materials and spatial aspects will also play an important role. You have experience in multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary collaborations and in experimental environments.
• Spatial design and architecture: Besides product design, you have affinity with or expertise in spatial design, interior design, architecture, sustainable use of materials and/or textiles or other design-related disciplines. You understand in which ways these disciplines can contribute to sustainable, circular solutions.
• PhD: You hold a PhD in a relevant discipline and experience with inter- and transdisciplinary research and the application of various research methods, as evidenced by publications and presentations. In addition, you excel at developing project proposals, have a proven track record of research achievements and publications, and possess expertise in securing grants.
• Liaison and networker: You have the competencies to be a natural bridge builder, bringing people and organizations from different sectors together. You have experience in setting up consortia and public-private partnerships.
• Educational innovator: You have experience in educational development and excel at inspiring and engaging students and teachers in research projects.
• Leadership: You have leadership qualities and proven experience in managing research teams. You can act as a coach for colleagues and know how to create an inspiring working environment.
• Creative and entrepreneurial competencies: You have creative and entrepreneurial competencies, with which you devise innovative solutions to sustainability challenges, and you know how to acquire and carry out research projects.

• Salary indication: scale 14/15. Lector A/Scale 14: gross monthly salary minimum € 6.460,11 and maximum € 8.234,90, Lector B/Scale 15: gross monthly salary minimum € 7.006,77 and maximum € 9.046,60 based on a 36-hour working week.
• Besides an informal and open working atmosphere, we offer attractive terms of employment in accordance with the CAO-HBO.
• The place of employment is Arnhem.
