OverviewElement has an opportunity for a Principle Battery Test Engineer to join our rapidly expanding team in Bristol UK. Flexible working could be considered for this role. Relocation assistance offered within UK.Element group focuses on battery safety and performance testing and failure analysis, for in a variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, consumer electronics, medical devices, wearables, and other applications.As a member of the operations team, the Principle Battery Test Engineer will support several internal stakeholders to expand Element’s battery testing business.This Lead Engineer position would be helping to develop a wider range of battery engineering and testing services, supporting testing for variety of battery testing projects, scaling from cell to large EV Pack Level programs, by supporting design, test planning, test setup, safety assessments and testing.They would also be required to support the sales teams and capture customer provided specifications & standards, writing scripts and programs for a variety of battery cycler/test stand controllers, and ensuring accurate, quality test results are provided to customers.Responsibilities

  • Oversee, manage, and conduct on-site testing of customer provided products based on provided standards or specifications. This includes understanding designs and schematics, validating project scope, equipment test setup and script writing, as well as delivering customer results
  • Provide technical and engineering leadership, supporting the development of new technologies and new test setups for custom battery testing requests
  • Simultaneously support multiple projects, accountable for accurate and timely release of testing data to customers including signoffs of quality control data as acceptable
  • Oversee standard and/or routine technical problem-solving activities
  • Communicate project status and test results to customer, commercial team members, and management throughout testing, while providing on-going technical support to clients throughout the project
  • Provide input and support on business development opportunities with new or existing customers and internal investments. Including facility and equipment specifications.
  • Setup and operate standard testing equipment across sites, including battery cyclers, test stand controllers such as temperature/humidity chambers, various test controllers, power supplies, etc.
  • Assist in the professional development, upskilling and training of novice technicians and other engineers within the local laboratories
  • Be adept at drawing on internal knowledge as well as industry and/or academic resources in reaching testing conclusion

Skills / Qualifications

  • Possess a Bachelors of Science or Engineering degree in a science, engineering or testing related field – preferred focus in electrical, electrochemical or mechanical engineering
  • Knowledge of safely testing cells, batteries, modules, EV packs, and/or Electrical Energy Storage Systems is essential
  • Experience using various software, or similar programs for EV battery testing is preferred
  • Working knowledge of laboratory safety, assessments and safety system implementation and quality management systems is essential
  • Must be self-motivated and adaptable, able to work independently in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written, organization, time-management, and customer service skills
  • Demonstrated ability to apply academic knowledge within the context of battery testing services
  • In-depth understanding of testing concepts; able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in diagrams or mathematical form, and deal with multiple abstract and concrete variables.
  • Good understand of battery testing lifecycles, performance, durability and safety testing requirements.
  • Knowledge of customer life cycle, oversight of operational safety from receipt, work and disposal
  • Ideally this person would have previously undertaken high-voltage training.
  • Has experience with battery cell and pack teardowns, processes, procedures and reporting.
  • Possess strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office
