Beyond the professionalism of each individual, at UIC Barcelona, you will find a young and dynamic working atmosphere.Click to find out more about UIC Barcelona.About your roleWe are looking for a PhD student fellow in the NeuroLipid group, funded by the project PID2023_1467160B-100, to undertake research under the supervision of Professor Núria Casals at UIC Barcelona.Key tasksThe research fellow will primarily focus on the structural and functional characterization of the CPT1A and CPT1C isoforms as targets in obesity treatmentKey responsibilities include:

• Expressing and purifying the CPT1A and CPT1C proteins, followed by obtaining their three-dimensional structures using CryoEM. The aim is to: a) understand why CPT1A has catalytic activity while CPT1C does not; and b) identify the binding site of the malonyl-CoA inhibitor on these proteins.

• Determining whether CPT1C can bind fatty acids of various sizes and saturation levels. If so, the fellow will study the regulatory role of these fatty acids on CPT1C’s interaction with its partners, ABHD6 and SAC1, in the context of hypothalamus.

• Exploring whether the N-terminal region of CPT1C inhibits CPT1A’s enzymatic activity and assessing its potential as a therapeutic agent in the treatment of obesity

Selection processThe UIC Barcelona selection process, following that which is outlined in the European OTM-R, will be carried out in two phases: a first pre-selection phase and a second interview phase.The project PI will be tasked with carrying out the initial evaluation and the subsequent interview. He might partner with other experts inside and outside of UIC Barcelona to complete the two phases of the selection process.We offer
