In 2015, prof. launched the Microbial Cleantech and Environmental Systems Analysis Team, then part of the Sustainable Energy, Air and Water Technology Research Group, and, since 2024, a proud member of the Biobased Sustainability Engineering (SUSTAIN) Research Group. SUSTAIN provides a dynamic and international environment, actively embracing diversity. Our team is a core member of the Centre of Excellence, the valorization consortium, the innovation hub for sustainable chemistry, the platform for resource recovery and circular economy, and the circular life support system programme of the European Space Agency (ESA).The cleantech and environmental analysis focus is on sustainable food, water and climate solutions using the power of the small (microbes) and the large (systems). The mission is to develop clean solutions based on microbial biotechnology and to improve the environmental impact of novel treatment and production systems. Key topics include processes and products with a low environmental footprint linked to nutrient recovery, single-cell protein (microbial protein), wastewater biotech, circular fertilizers, manure processing, anammox, high-rate activated sludge, purple bacteria, protein transition, sustainable food, the fertilizer-feed-food value chain,…The advertised position is in the Environmental Systems Analysis sub-team, led by , specialized in: (i) sustainability assessment of novel technologies in wastewater and manure treatment, (ii) method development for life cycle assessment (LCA), and (iii) development and application of material flow analysis (MFA) in relation to water, nitrogen, phosphorus and protein. The work in this team is interdisciplinary, with strong links to programming and computation, next to economics and other social sciences.Position
