Employing more than 15,000 people, it is actively involved in education and research, management and administration, as well as technical and social service provision on a daily basis. It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. With its 11 faculties and more than 80 departments offering state-of-the-art study programmes grounded in research in a wide range of academic fields, Ghent University is a logical choice for its staff and students.YOUR TASKSThe Laboratory for Integrative Metabolomics (LIMET) at Ghent University, part of the Department of Translational Physiology, Infectiology, and Public Health (DI04), has a 20% position available for a postdoc in ambient ionization-based metabolomics. The goal of metabolomics is to detect, identify, and (semi-)quantify all metabolites in a biological system (analogous to genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and other “omics” disciplines.). This metabolite pool, reflective of our genetic background and environmental exposures, forms an accurate phenotypical snapshot that has potential to improve disease diagnosis and follow up by significantly enhancing sensitivity and selectivity of diagnostic tests. In this regard, conventional metabolomics methods such as liquid chromatography (LC) coupled to mass spectrometry (MS) are mostly suited for in-depth metabolome characterisation, quantification and annotation, while direct chromatography-free high-throughput workflows of ambient ionisation MS (AIMS) methods pose valuable alternatives for clinical translation.Your practical research tasks will include conducting scientific research within the scope of the above-mentioned project, which involves:Developing LA-REIMS analytical methods to improve sensitivity, specificity, and annotation in metabolite detection, as well as data quality and throughput.Optimizing biological samples (a wide range of biofluids) pre-treatment and handling strategies in line with metabolomics analytical methods.Performing statistical analysis of collected data: from simple comparison tests to advanced statistical models and machine learning algorithms, applied to metabolomics, as well as in combination with clinical data and other ‘omics’ data.Writing research results for publication in high-quality scientific journals.Presenting your research at national and international conferences.WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FORYou hold a Ph.D. relevant to the topic. You are able to work effectively in an (international) team, as well as independently plan and execute tasks. You have a good knowledge of (analytical) chemistry and biology, with a keen interest in life sciences and biomedical research. You have in-depth expertise in mass spectrometry, particularly in metabolomics method development and data interpretation. You have proven ability in metabolite identification, demonstrating skills in analyzing complex datasets and elucidating the structures of unknown compounds. You have experience with high-resolution mass spectrometry instruments; familiarity with Waters QTOF systems and software is advantageous. You have excellent analytical and statistical skills. You are proficient in at least one programming language (R, Python, etc.) and are eager to further develop your skills.

You are fluent in scientific English, both orally and in writing.WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU
  • We offer you a contract of indefinite duration.
  • Your contract will start on 1/02/2025 at the earliest.
  • Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale WM1 to WM4 (if you hold a Master’s degree) or salary scale PD1 to PD4 (if you hold a doctorate).

. * All Ghent University staff members enjoy a number of benefits, such as a wide range of training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave (on an annual basis for a full-time job) supplemented by annual fixed bridge days, a bicycle allowance and eco vouchers.
