OrganisationJob descriptionThe Faculty of Spatial Sciences is looking to appoint a postdoctoral researcher on the topic of regional labour market dynamics. The main responsibility will be to initiate and perform research on the regional dimensions of career, talent and skill development in the context of socio-economic transformations including technological change, demographic transitions and internationalization. With this line of research, the postdoctoral researcher will contribute to our activities in ‘Talent in de regio’ which is a large research project together with the Hanze University of Applied Science aimed at furthering talent development in the North of the Netherlands, with a stress on the province of Groningen. In addition to conducting policy-relevant academic research, activities in ‘Talent in de Regio’ involve disseminating research results to relevant stakeholders as well as to set-up new lines of inquiry.Central tasks include

  • Update and maintain our online monitor of talent mobility (

) by using microdata from Statistics Netherlands. * Analysing results in terms of recruiting, educating, developing and tying talent to the region.

  • Identify, analyze and contribute to policy relevant topics like Life Long Developing, education and labour market connections, regional career paths etc.
  • Conduct research activities including: literature analysis, policy analysis, stakeholder interviews, analysis of surveys, and Statistics Netherlands microdata.
  • Instigate and report study results in international academic outlets as well as to audiences consisting of regional administrators, policy advisors, entrepreneurs etc.

The position involves a limited teaching component in the form of support to our undergraduate course in Economic Geography as well as limited ad-hoc student supervision.Finally, we will explore the possibility to involve the postdoctoral researcher in the supervision of PhD-candidates and we encourage pursuing publishing and attracting research funding beyond the involvement in ‘Talent in de Regio’. The Faculty of Spatial Sciences is a growing faculty with an open character. With approximately 100 members of staff, 100 PhD researchers and around 1,100 students, we focus on high quality teaching and research in the field of human and economic geography, demography, and spatial planning. With our collective research theme ‘towards Wellbeing, Innovation and Spatial Transformation’ (tWIST), it is our mission to produce research that is world-leading, distinctive, and policy-relevant. With two bachelor and seven master’s programs, we provide a wide range of courses in the fields of geography and spatial sciences. Our motto is: we are making places better together.
The Department of Economic Geography, in which the position will be based, is one of the four departments in the faculty and it offers an open and friendly academic environment with an international staff. The department has about 20 members of staff and 25 PhD researchers. The University of Groningen has a very strong reputation as one of the main centres in regional science globally. In terms of teaching, the department of Economic Geography contributes to the Bachelor Human Geography and Planning and it is responsible for the Master’s program in Economic Geography, which includes the track ‘Regional Competitiveness and Trade’, and the master of Real Estate Studies. Our research focusses on issues related to regional labour markets, migration, entrepreneurship, geographies of well-being, happiness and discontent, the green and digital transition, socio-spatial inequalities and real estate applying quantitative, qualitative and mixed research methods.

QualificationsOur ideal candidate should have
  • A PhD degree (or nearly finished) in the field of economic geography, regional science, applied economics, sociology or in another social science showing a clear affinity to labour market research and the analysis of spatial problems with proven experience with quantitative research methods.
  • Publications in international peer-reviewed academic journals that testify of your interest and contribution to the topic of regional labour market dynamics.
  • A network of relevant academic connections related to the topic of Regional Labour Market Dynamics, for example in the field of economic geography, regional science, labour economics, and/or labour (market) sociology.
  • The skills to present academic analyses to varied audiences including labour market professionals and policy makers. Also, you are comfortable building and maintaining a professional network to regional policy makers that are affiliated or relevant to the research that you are performing.
  • A fluency in English (reading, writing, speaking) and a good command of Dutch or a clear plan to learn Dutch to be able to communicate with stakeholders in the ‘Talent in de Regio’ project.

Conditions of employmentWe offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

  • A salary depending on qualifications and work experience starting from a minimum of € 3,877 (salary scale 10.4) to a maximum of € 5,090 gross per month (salary scale 10 max) Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities) for a full-time position, excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus and participation in a pension scheme for employees.   • A holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income and an 8.3% end-of-the-year allowance.
  • An appointment on a temporary basis for one year, with the possibility of an extension of two years, depending on the (financial) circumstances.
