Postdoctoral Researcher Raising Awareness & Addressing Stigma
Offer DescriptionAre you interested in young people and gambling? Do you want to contribute to make more young gamblers aware of their need for help and of the different care options? Then apply for this postdoc project focused on developing and testing communication campaigns that aim to enhance young people’s awareness of care and their needs for care, and address stigma related to gambling harms.Postdoc Opportunity
The Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR) is looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher for the ZonMW funded project: “Raising Awareness & Addressing Stigma: Developing communication to enhance youngsters’ uptake into gambling care” This 45 month 0.8 fte postdoctoral researcher position, embedded within the Persuasive Communication Program Group, will be supervised by dr. Eva van Reijmersdal and dr. Hilde Voorveld. The number of (young) people that gamble has sharply increased since the opening of the online market in the Netherlands in 2021. So is the number of people that need help. However, literature shows that only 10% of people who show problematic gambling behaviors, seek help. Moreover, awareness of care options and the central ‘Loket Kansspel’ are low. To further enhance uptake of young people into care, a first step is to raise awareness of care and of the needs that young people have with regard to gambling-related problems. Therefore, this project will develop and test communication campaigns that aim to enhance young people’s (13-24 years old) awareness of care and their needs for care. With these evidence-based campaigns and a theoretical model, we deliver concrete communication tools that can enhance the accessibility of care and patient uptake into care. The proposed project is strongly focused on making practical impact. More specifically, it will make an impact on young people who experience gambling harms, on professionals in the field, on policy makers and the gambling authority and on the academic community. By closely involving young people in the project, we make sure that we not ‘just’ create knowledge for science but create knowledge that can directly lead to action to benefit the needs of the young people who need care. What are you going to do
In this project, you will take a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative research. An evidence based social media campaign will be developed, tested and implemented to enhance the uptake of youth into care. We will use focus groups, co-creation workshops, experiments and a campaign implementation phase. In each subproject, we work closely with people with lived experience in the roles of advisors, co-creators, discussion partners, informants and implementation partners. The proposed project group brings together Dutch scholars in the field of persuasive communication (Eva van Reijmersdal and Hilde Voorveld) as well as renowned international scholars specialized in communication about gambling harms (Agnes Nairn and Raffaello Rossi), Hands, the organization that is currently in charge of the Loket Kansspel (thé platform of the Dutch Gambling Authority through which all people in the Netherlands experiencing gambling harms are to be informed about gambling harms, but also where they can find help), as well as people with lived experience (including copywriter Martijn de Vreeze). You will:
