Job description

Offer DescriptionContextAs part of the structuring action 3 of the PEPR O2R (organic robotics), we are calling for applications for an 18-month postdoctoral contract. To answer the questions and problems relating to the integration of robots into our lives and society, the PEPR O2R is proposing to implement robotics that is socially adapted, in terms of its principles, behaviour, performance and uses, and open to the complexity of society’s challenges. Led by the CEA, CNRS and INRIA, this exploratory research programme will be based on a multidisciplinary approach integrating humanities and social sciences (HSS), computer sciences, robotics and engineering.AssignmentThe project behind the postdoctoral contract aims to avoid parallelism between researchers in HSS and robotics, by defining a set of long-term joint projects – experiments that allow the two fields to intersect and work together in order to create new interdisciplinary paradigms, extending their research to ethical and philosophical issues linked to the integration of robots into society. The design and implementation of joint experiments will enable researchers to immerse themselves in other disciplines by carrying out experiments in the field. These experimental field studies will make it possible to investigate various themes such as the social adaptation of robots, the a priori and pre-conceptions that people have of robots, the role of errors in machine learning and interaction, notions of anxiety and trust, and ethical aspects. To carry out these studies, the group is looking to recruit an experienced candidate to help it study these dimensions of human-robot interaction by using the approach and methods of the humanities and social sciences.RequirementsResearch Field Sociology Education Level PhD or equivalentResearch Field Anthropology » Social anthropology Education Level PhD or equivalentSkills/QualificationsThis postdoctoral position is open to:

  • a candidate holding a PhD in sociology or social anthropology.
  • an experienced candidate who can demonstrate several years of international research experience.
  • a candidate capable of working in an environment where robotics, computing and the human and social sciences intersect, and who therefore has experience of multidisciplinary research.
  • a candidate who can provide expertise on the socio-cultural background of robotics and artificial intelligence. This expertise will focus in particular on the various ways of anticipating the integration of embedded artificial intelligence and robots into society. In this respect, a good knowledge of the field of science fiction will be appreciated (which concerns not only cinematographic works but also literature). Knowledge of the field and methods of foresight or futurology is also a plus.
  • a candidate who can work in English but who is also able to conduct ethnographic research in French.
