Job description

Offer DescriptionDevelop, characterise, and optimise new materials for high-energy lithium batteriesWhat you will doImec is at the forefront of designing and developing future energy storage technologies to accelerate the transition to electrified road transport. Lithium-ion batteries based on the conversion reaction mechanism may break the energy density barrier of conventional systems exploiting the well-known intercalation chemistry. Despite potentially offering unparalleled energy, the conversion chemistry is currently not fully controlled and shows intrinsic limitations, hindering its widespread implementation in practical systems. As a Researcher on next-generation batteries, you will explore electrode nanostructuring and physical confinement at the nanoscale as viable approaches to improve the performance of conversion materials. In this job, your main responsibilities will be:

  • Support a multidisciplinary team in developing new materials for energy storage and conversion.
  • Perform characterisation and electrochemical testing of new conversion cathodes for lithium batteries.
  • Design experiments together with the Project Leader, perform experiments, and plan research tasks on your own.
  • Deliver research results in line with imec requirements in a timely fashion and of high scientific quality.
  • Discuss scientific results in technical meetings.
  • Provide output in the form of scientific presentations in technical meetings, deliverables, papers on publishable results, participation in conferences, and patents.
  • Contribute creative and innovative ideas to enhance ongoing research programs and initiatives.

  • Specialized knowledge of electrochemical characterisation techniques (e.g., voltammetry, EIS, galvanostatic cycling, PITT, or GITT).
  • Experience in developing new materials for lithium-ion batteries (preferred).
  • Experience with battery testing (e.g., CC and CC-CV cycling, rate capability testing) (preferred).
  • You are a strong team player, able to work within multidisciplinary project teams.
  • You are able to conceive new ideas, plan research tasks on your own, perform experiments, analyse data, and regularly report progress to the Project Leader.
  • You are a good communicator.
