Job description

Offer DescriptionWe are inviting a postdoctoral candidate to join our team for a two-year assignment in the Rubin-LSST group at the CNRS LAPP (Laboratoire d’Annecy de Physique des Particules) in France.
The Rubin Observatory will be a central instrument for cosmology in the coming decade. Rubin Observatory is a 8-m class telescope being built in Chile, which will perform a photometric survey (called LSST) of the visible sky in six optical bands over the course of ten years. The time window 2024-2026 will be a great opportunity to join the Rubin-LSST project, as this will correspond to the final phase of the commissioning and to the recording of the first on-sky science data with the full camera in 2025.The LAPP group has long-standing contributions in several activities: i) computing developments for the Data Release Processing of Rubin, ii) cosmology constraints from galaxy clusters within the Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC), iii) commissioning of the Rubin focal plane, iv) commissioning of the Rubin telescope in Chile. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to play a key role within DESC in the scientific preparation of the analysis which will allow to establish the first cosmological constraints from the galaxy clusters count.
The postdoctoral researcher will use the first validation data collected on the sky at the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025 in order to validate and optimize the production of all the components necessary for the analysis of clusters, in particular: photometric redshifts, masks, weak lensing measurements of background galaxies, etc. The goal will be to obtain the first catalogs of clusters with their characteristics (position, redshift, richness, mass, tri-axiality parameters, etc.).
The successful candidate will also work on the development of the pipeline that will fit the cosmological constraints from the cluster catalogs.LAPP is a laboratory of the Institute of Nuclear Physics and Particle Physics (IN2P3), an institute of the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), which coordinates programs in these fields. LAPP is a joint research unit (UMR 5814) of the CNRS and the University of Savoie Mont-Blanc (USMB). More than 150 researchers, teacher-researchers, engineers, technicians, administrators, students and foreign visitors work there. The research carried out at LAPP aims to study the physics of elementary particles and their fundamental interactions, as well as to explore their links with the great structures of the Universe. The work of the LAPP teams aims, among other things, to understand the origin of the mass of particles, to unravel the mystery of dark matter or to determine what happened to the anti-matter present in our universe at the time of the Big Bang. The LAPP Rubin-LSST group is currently composed of seven permanent researchers, one postdoctoral researcher, one PhD student, one IT engineer and one instrumentation engineer.RequirementsResearch Field Astronomy Education Level PhD or equivalentResearch Field Astronomy Education Level PhD or equivalentResearch Field Astronomy Education Level PhD or equivalentLanguages FRENCH Level BasicResearch Field Astronomy Years of Research Experience 1 – 4Research Field Astronomy » Astrophysics Years of Research Experience 1 – 4Research Field Astronomy » Cosmology Years of Research Experience 1 – 4Additional InformationEligibility criteriaOur ideal candidate would be a postdoctoral researcher at the start of their career who is interested in continuing to develop their skills by working on a large-scale international project.
