Offer DescriptionJob positionPostdoctoral researcher in ERC project on the trade-offs of democracy (DEMOTRADEOFF)The Department of Political Science at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) invites applications for a Postdoc position in the ERC-funded research project “Reconciling Citizens with the Trade-offs of Democracy: Attitudes Toward Democracy Under Rising Politicization”The project is led by Professor and it runs from 2022 to 2027. The project will be part of the Political Science Department research group on .The DEMOTRADEOFF projectDEMOTRADEOFF aims to study democratic trade-offs and how these might fuel political discontent.Democracies involve trade-offs since all their desirable qualities cannot be simultaneously maximized. Hard choices must be made to balance principles such as popular sovereignty and the rule of law, or freedom and political equality. However, we still know little about the positions of citizens and parties regarding democratic trade-offs; how these contribute to citizens’ increasing discontent with democracy; or how the rising politicization of the trade-offs of democracy might exacerbate these dynamics. DEMOTRADEOFF examines these questions through a combination of cross-sectional and panel surveys, content analysis, and experiments.Further information about the project can be found .Job descriptionThe successful applicant will make a leading contribution to the DEMOTRADEOFF project. The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to contribute to the development of the project’s methodological and theoretical tasks. The successful candidate will engage in collaborative research with the project team members that leads to the submission of publications to top outlets. The postdoctoral researcher will also assist in the management of the research project.Requirements

  • PhD in political science or related discipline (completed or close to completion).
  • Interest in the field of public opinion and democracy.
  • Strong quantitative methodological skills and a high level of proficiency of Stata/R.
  • Willingness to keep learning how to use new tools and methods.
  • Some experience with survey design and/or experiments is an asset, but not required.
  • Very good command of English and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interest in academic research, ideally proven through international publications, collaboration in research projects, or related research activities.
  • Ambition and ability to produce high-quality research.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Ability to work independently.
